by Ross Ramsey, The Texas Tribune
It's been a year since that impossible thing happened. Ted Cruz, in his first run for public office, beat the fabulously wealthy Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst -- himself the winner of four previous statewide elections -- in a Republican primary runoff for the U.S. Senate.
Now the junior senator from Texas has joined that small and select group of Americans touring early primary states and denying that they are interested in running for president of the United States.
Cruz has a weird parallel to the current president. They are both lawyers. Their opponents are passionate and question their meager experience as officeholders and their eligibility for the nation's top political job. President Obama has the so-called birthers to contend with; Cruz, who was born in Canada, is swatting at a low but persistent buzz about whether he?s got the right stuff, geographically, to be president. He says, for the record, that he has looked into the law and that he does, indeed, qualify for the office he says he is not currently seeking.
Whatever he does next, it's what Cruz has done so far that has even made that question possible.
When Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison decided not to run for re-election, all of the smart kids said the seat belonged to Dewhurst if he wanted it. He's a bit stiff, as Texas politicians go, but he looks senatorial. He had those four successful campaigns under his belt -- one for land commissioner and three for lieutenant governor. He is personally wealthy and has proved to be perfectly willing to spend his own money on his campaigns.
It was a midterm election of the sort that locks in the institutional political donors: Dewhurst was either going to be a U.S. senator or the lieutenant governor after the race ended, and it is not smart to pick a fight with the holder of either office.
And the primary opposition did not appear threatening. Cruz, a former state solicitor general, had never run for office. He was unknown to voters and appeared to have neither the time nor the money to last in the race. Tom Leppert, a former Dallas mayor, had only a regional following. Craig James, a former football player, was another political newcomer.
Slam-dunk, Dewhurst. Next question?
The primaries got delayed, giving Cruz and the others time to work. Dewhurst ignored signs that Cruz had been working the grass roots and then spent a bunch of money attacking him -- at the time hoping, in the strange rationality of campaign politics, to sink Leppert. That made Cruz well known enough to get into a runoff. And then Dewhurst found, to his surprise, that the dreaded "moderate" label had been attached to him and that Cruz had successfully run to his right.
Cruz easily defeated his Democratic opponent, Paul Sadler, in November, took office in January and now, just six months later, is giving speeches in Iowa.
He hasn't had time to do much but generate headlines in Washington, but his climb has made him the current patron saint of long-shot candidates and the stuff of nightmares for seemingly safe incumbents.
Like this: Attorney General Greg Abbott has every reason to be confident in his current pursuit of the governor's office. He's got money, his opponents don't, the establishment is with him, he has won five statewide elections, yada, yada, yada. His chief opponent at the moment, Tom Pauken, has never held elected office and doesn't have Abbott's resources.
Dewhurst himself is racing to the right in his 2014 re-election bid. He has three strong Republican opponents and a tough primary ahead.
The Greg Abbotts of Texas politics have one piece of information Dewhurst did not have: When there are no strong Democrats running, there is no reason to concede the right to another Republican.
Cruz has had a short tenure in office, but on this first anniversary of his primary runoff win over Dewhurst you can see his impact on the Republican Party of Texas: He has become a verb.
Talk to Republican incumbents at the statewide level, in Congressional races, in legislative races and farther down the ballot, and you will hear it again and again, the new phrase in Texas Republican politics: "I don't want to get Cruzed in my primary."

So-called "lad mags" are currently sold like this on the shelves of Britain's Co-op stores. The chain now threatens to drop sale of the magazines entirely if the publishers do not cover the sexy covers with a "modesty bag"
Come on, lads! Cover up the sexy mag covers, please...
One of Britain's largest magazine retailers has ordered magazines with overt sexual imagery to cover up their front covers with "modesty bags" or risk being withdrawn from sale.
So-called "lads' mags" - publications marketed primarily to men - such as Zoo, FHM, Nuts and Loaded have been a staple on supermarket shelves for years and have become synonymous with the sexual content and glamour model photos displayed on their front covers.
Supermarket chain the Co-operative gave an ultimatum to publishers on Monday, telling them to deliver the magazines in pre-sealed bags designed to obscure the front cover.
(Read More: No porn please, we're British)
If they do not comply by September 9 then the Co-operative has threatened to cease selling the magazine at the 4,000-plus stores it currently operates.
"As a community-based retailer we have listened to the concerns of our customers and members, many of whom say they object to their children being able to see overt sexual images in our stores," Steve Murrells, the chief executive of retail for The Co-operative Group, said in a press release.
"Whilst we have tried to mitigate the likelihood of young children seeing the images with a number of measures in-store, the most effective way of doing this is for these magazines to be put in individual, sealed modesty bags."
(Read more: Web-based challenges for the porn industry)
Several U.S. chains already cover up racy magazine covers. Ten years ago, Wal-Mart, halted sales of Maxim, Stuff and FHM men's magazines.
As an interim measure, the Co-operative has introduced opaque screens on shelves to reinforce its existing policy limiting the display of such material.
Jo Swinson, a junior minister at the government's equalities office, welcomed the move and hoped other retailers will follow suit.
"Many parents aren't comfortable with the way that sexualized imagery has become like wallpaper - everywhere from the bus stop to the corner shop," she said.
"Adults should be left to make their own decisions about what legal sexual images they look at, but the place for these is not next to the sweets at children's eye-level."
The decision by the retailer is in line with recommendations from a parliamentary review two years ago which recommended a clampdown on sexualized "wallpaper" surrounding children. However, the move goes against existing guidelines for retailers which say that men's lifestyle magazines should not be placed next to children's' magazines or be at a child's eye level.

A spokesman for Bauer Media, the publisher of Zoo magazine told CNBC that it was aware of the Co-operative's request for sealed modesty bags, but supported the existing best-practice guidelines for the display of men's magazines.
"We are sensitive to the mood of the public, to that end we have responded accordingly and have changed ZOO magazine's cover imagery and phrasing," it said.
"We already have agreements in place with all major retailers, including Co-op, to ensure Zoo magazine is displayed appropriately and we work closely with all our retailers to ensure they are adhered to."

Starbucks is selling a lot more coffee in China.
According to its latest quarterly report, Starbucks saw a 30% year-over-year jump in revenues from its Asia-Pacific region, lifted by outstanding sales in China.
"The very strong sales volumes prove that the coffee concept can succeed in traditional tea-drinking countries," said R J Hottovy, director of consumer equity research at Morningstar, Inc. "It's resonating very well with [inland] cities."
Starbucks' solid sales growth in the region was driven by the 500 new stores it opened in China last year, and its Chinese expansion plans aren't slowing down.
The Seattle-based coffee giant said it plans to open its thousandth store in China by the end the year. In addition to already being in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, the company says its stores will have penetrated lesser-known cities. By 2014, Starbucks said China will surpass Canada to become the second largest market, after the United States.
In the last five years, overall retail coffee sales in China climbed by 10%, beating growth in Hong Kong, Japan and the 3% global average, according to data from research company Euromonitor International.
Starbucks said its marketing strategy in China is similar to that of its Western markets. It continues to focus on its core food and beverage products while also offering other locally oriented choices.
"The demographics they are targeting are younger and more affluent groups," Hottovy said.
Starbucks opened its first store in Taipei in 1998, followed by its first mainland China store in Beijing in 1999. But the coffee shop market is beginning to heat up. "Increasing competition will be the most pressing issue as more Western coffee brands enter the Chinese market," he said.
In 2012, an average Chinese person consumed about two cups of coffee per year. That's a far cry from the global average of 134 cups a year, according to Euromonitor. Coffee has less than 1% of the Chinese hot-drink market share. By contrast, tea makes up 54% of the market.

By the time Khalil Mack's season is over, it's likely his name will be next to a couple NCAA records. He enters the season 19 tackles for loss and three forced fumbles away from having the record.
It's also likely Mack leaves Buffalo with a trophy of two. Mack has been added to the watch lists for the Butkus, Lombardi and Bednarik awards. Out of high school, Mack was a lightly regarded prospect. Initially he was headed to Liberty, an FCS school. But when members of the coaching staff went to Buffalo, Mack went with them.
At Buffalo, Mack has developed into one of the nation's best all-around players on defense. Playing outside linebacker in a 3-4, he's at his best when he can rush upfield. But he's proven to be adept at dropping back in coverage. That combination of skills should give the Mid-American Conference its second consecutive first-round pick after Eric Fisher went No. 1 this year.
When it comes to pure aggression and drive, you'll be hard pressed to find a player that tops Mack. He's constantly on the move, whether it's rushing upfield or dropping back into coverage. He can quickly decipher the direction of cutbacks, bootlegs and misdirection plays. Mack also has a penchant for timing his jumps properly when he can't close in on the quarterback.
Mack's tenacity truly goes from whistle to whistle. When he takes down the runner, he often tries to strip out the football. That has led to 11 career forced fumbles for Mack.
Particularly on option plays, Mack's on-field awareness is evident. He knows when to commit to rushing the quarterback and when to stay on the runner. Mack also shows this same awareness when playing in zone coverage. Because of that, he gets a good break on the ball. To state it simply, Mack has explosion and range, a scary combination.
As a pass rusher, Mack knows how to make himself small. He has the flexibility to lower and turn his shoulders square to the quarterback. That leaves the target small for opposing offensive linemen. This also helps negate an offensive lineman's natural length advantage. As important as it is to have actual "moves" as a pass rusher, this technique is just as important.
Sometimes Mack's aggressiveness will get the best of him. A good offensive tackle will be able to use Mack's speed against him and driving him around and out of a play. It doesn't happen much against MAC competition, but tackles with quick feet can mirror against him.
It would also be nice to see Mack employ a little more power as a rusher. He's not much of a bull rusher (pardon the pun) and doesn't get a lineman pushing back. That's somewhat surprising considering that Mack shows strength against the run to shed blockers.
It's not something he can improve on technically, but it's worth noting that Mack was suspended for the first game of the 2012 season. He got into a fight with a teammate.
We'll learn a lot about Mack in the first game of the season when Buffalo plays Ohio State. Although Buffalo likes to move Mack from the right to left side throughout the game, he'll go head-to-head with OSU left tackle Jack Mewhort, a possible top 100 pick. Mewhort will test Mack's take-on strength and could give him some trouble.
Ultimately, Mack's draft status will be up for debate until he performs in the Senior Bowl (assuming he gets an invitation). Before last year's Senior Bowl, there were questions about Eric Fisher and his ability to play against top-level competition. Mack will face the same scrutiny. How he overcomes it will determine his draft position.

"The Wolverine" should claw its way to a healthy box-office win this weekend, as Hugh Jackman's mutant hero returns to theaters with another solo outing. But what if you're not a super-fan of superheroes? Maybe you're suffering from blockbuster burnout, and need an entertainment option of a kinder, gentler ilk. Here are some options, from lesser-known movies to home video and book choices.
AP; AMC; Lionsgate
"Fruitvale Station," "Breaking Bad" and "Orange Is The New Black" are some options to help with blockbuster burnout.
'Fruitvale Station'
You may not find "Fruitvale Station" playing next to "The Wolverine" and "Pacific Rim" at your local mall multiplex. But it's worth seeking out at an arthouse or indie theater if need be. It's based on the true story of Oscar Grant, 22, who was shot to death by a police officer at a San Francisco train station in the early hours of New Year's Day 2009. Grant was no saint, and the film doesn't portray him as such, but he was handcuffed and unarmed when he was killed by the officer, who had announced he was going for his Taser, then suddenly drew a gun and fired into Grant's back. The film won both the Grand Jury Prize for dramatic feature and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. See it with someone you're comfortable discussing social issues with, because whatever your mindset going in, you'll want to talk about it. (Check local theater listings.)
'Breaking Bad'
The final eight episodes of "Breaking Bad" are speeding towards us like a meth-powered RV, and if you need to catch up, the time is now. You can watch the already aired episodes on DVD or via online streaming, and there are plenty of online dissections of each episode's pros and cons. Walter White's transformation from Mr. Chips to Scarface has been an engrossing and terrifying one, and how it will end is anyone's guess. (Aug. 11, 9 p.m., AMC.)
'Orange Is the New Black'
"Orange Is the New Black" is no "Oz." This new Netflix-only series focuses on Piper Chapman, a wealthy blonde New Yorker who finds herself a fish out of water when she's sent to a women's prison for 15 months. Piper is accustomed to making artisanal soaps and wearing designer clothes, not fighting for phone calls and wearing neon-orange prison garb. The women she meets are fascinating, including Laura Prepon of "That '70s Show" as the lover who helped land Chapman behind bars in the first place, and an almost unrecognizable Kate Mulgrew as the prison cook who tries to starve Chapman out after a poorly timed insult. (Netflix streaming.)
'The Way Way Back'
The Atlantic said "The Way Way Back" may be the best movie of the summer, and includes A-list star Steve Carell, yet even the most dedicated moviegoer can be forgiven for not knowing about it -- it hasn't seen even a quarter of the publicity blitz that surrounds movies like "Pacific Rim." Kids of the 1970s and '80s will remember that "the way back" was what many of us called the oddly situated seats in the far back of a station wagon, and that's where 14-year-old Duncan (Liam James) sits. He's struggling through life as his mom (Toni Collette) contemplates marrying her boorish boyfriend (Steve Carell). He meets pals at a local water park called Water Whizz and hears rumors that someone one passed another person in the tube slide, which seems impossible. One guess if it really is. (In theaters now.)
'Gone Girl'
Books where you're not sure if you can trust the narrator make for bumpy and intriguing reads. The 2012 bestseller "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn takes a wife's disappearance and forces the reader to stay alert, hopping from one possible scenario to another. You'll be reminded of the Laci Peterson case more than once. And if you like the book, get ready for the eventual movie, which will star Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as the main couple. (In bookstores and available for download now.)
'Power Moves'
Need a book to keep you laughing while you're living in your 'Bring (Chrysler Sebring) or downing brews at 'Bee's (Applebee's)? You need to get your hands on "Power Moves," you guys. The new book is an in-depth look at the life of (fictional, or so they say) Karl Welzein, the bad boy behind the hilarious Dad Boner Twitter feed. Karl must cope with Nosey Lady at work and a wife and kids who just don't get his rockin' off-the-chain, all-American life. How is this book not No. 1 in America? Kinda concerning, you guys.

Edward Snowden speaks during an interview with The Guardain in Hong Kong.
By Elizabeth Chuck and Tony Capra, NBC News
Self-proclaimed NSA leaker Edward Snowden would not face the death penalty if he were sent home, Attorney General Eric Holder said in a letter to his Russian counterpart this week.
Holder also said Snowden would not be tortured and would have all the protections of the U.S. civilian court if he were to come home from the Moscow airport where he has been hiding out.
The assurances were revealed in a letter dated July 23 and released on Friday, seeking to dispel claims about what would happen to Snowden if Russia handed him over to face charges of illegally disclosing government secrets about surveillance programs, Holder said.
The letter was sent to Alexander Vladimirovich Konovalov, the Russian minister of justice.
"I can report that the United States is prepared to provide to the Russian government the following assurances regarding the treatment Mr. Snowden would face upon return to the United States," Holder wrote.
"First, the United States would not seek the death penalty for Mr. Snowden should he return to the United States." In addition, "Mr. Snowden will not be tortured. Torture is unlawful in the United States," the letter said.?
Snowden, 30, has been trapped in Moscow for more than a month while he looks for a country that will grant him asylum.?
Russia has refused to hand over Snowden, who leaked details of secret U.S. surveillance programs to American and British media, and is considering a temporary asylum request.?
Holder called media reports that Snowden has filed papers seeking temporary asylum in Russia on grounds that if he were returned to the U.S., he would be tortured or face the death penalty "entirely without merit." He also said Snowden would be "promptly" brought before a civilian court.
"We believe that these assurances eliminate these asserted grounds for Mr. Snowden's claim that he should be treated as a refugee or granted asylum, temporary or otherwise," Holder wrote in the nearly two-page letter.
Snowden's passport was revoked on June 22, but he remains a U.S. citizen and is eligible for a limited validity passport good for direct return to the U.S., the attorney general wrote.
Snowden's lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, told NBC News the letter didn't reveal anything new.?
"Snowden's current situation is due to the actions of the U.S. authorities, who annulled his passport," Kucherena said. "That is why he has ended up in the transit zone of the Sheremetyevo airport."
Kucherena also said he was disappointed by Russia's bureaucratic processes, which he said have caused his client to suffer.?
NBC's Albina Kovalyova contributed to this report.?Reuters and The Associated Press also contributed.

LAT PHOTOGRAPHIC - Tax issues could lead to the end of the Indian Grand Prix.
India has emerged as the most likely to lose its Formula one race for 2014, as Formula One CEO Bernie Ecclestone promises teams the 2014 calendar will not have more than 20 races.
Next year, New Jersey and Austria, along with Russia, are expecting to join the schedule, meaning that the calendar could blow out to 22 races. Ecclestone, however, has vowed to limit the schedule to 20.
German-language reports in Auto Motor und Sport and Speed Week said that India and Korea are the races likely to fall victim.
India's problems are not new ones for that venue. Ahead of the first race near New Delhi two years ago, the event was threatened until the 11th hour over a tax dispute.
The Indian government wants the teams and drivers to be taxed according to their high incomes, but so far Ecclestone has managed to placate the issue.

Sam Claflin plays Finnick in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."
"Hunger Games" fans still have four months to wait before the second film in the series, "Catching Fire," hits theaters. But a new trailer was released at Comic-Con this weekend and the odds are definitely in your favor that you'll love it.
Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) may have won the Games in the first film, but as readers of Suzanne Collins' books know, their troubles are far from over.
"You fought very hard in the Games, Miss Everdeen, but they were games," Panem President Snow (Donald Sutherland) tells our heroine in the new trailer. "Would you like to be in a real war?"
War is where Panem seems to be headed, with Katniss and Peeta's victory making them heroes to the subjugated Districts. But The Capitol is preparing for the Quarter Quell, the 75th annual games, which come with a twist.
Much of the cast from the first film returns, with some new additions, including Sam Claflin as Finnick, a hunky 24-year-old who won the Games at just 14.
While the first sighting of Finnick was much-awaited by fans, Jezebel.com was less than pleased, comparing him to "the love interest from a 2002 Disney Channel original movie," and sneering, "District 4 ? rich in the fruits of the sea and L.A. Looks Mega Hold hair gel." Some were unhappy that "Grey's Anatomy" star Jesse Williams wasn't cast in the part.
But readers pointed out that Finnick was described in the books as a teen-idol type, and the casting fits that description perfectly. "I think he's dreamy, and very cheeky & cute looking, which is what I wanted from Finnick, so I'm happy!" wrote a reader going by Glitterbug.
"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" opens Nov. 22.

Associated Press WASHINGTON President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that he is nominating former first daughter Caroline Kennedy as U.S. ambassador to Japan, offering the most-famous living member of a prominent American family a new role of service to country. Kennedy, an attorney and bestselling book editor, is being rewarded for helping put Obama in the White House where her father served until his assassination 50 years ago. If confirmed, she would be the first woman in a post where many other prominent Americans have served to strengthen a vital Asian tie. Kennedy helped propel Obama to the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination in a celebrated endorsement over Hillary Rodham Clinton ? the only time she?s endorsed a presidential candidate other than her uncle Ted Kennedy in 1980. She was a co-chairwoman of Obama?s vice presidential search committee and in the 2012 race served as one of 35 national co-chairs of his re-election campaign.

"They are very grateful to Zimmerman for what he did, but they do not want to get involved," a friend of Mark and Dana Michelle Gerstle told The Daily Mail in London.
ObamaCare: You Can Win With The Facts
The Gerstles are afraid they'll be targeted if they make Zimmerman look like a hero, their friend said, speaking anonymously.
The couple had scheduled a news conference on Wednesday to talk about the incident, but have since cancelled it, reports ABC News.
Mark O'Mara, Zimmerman's attorney, said the family had asked to speak, but then became worried about the anger still surrounding the verdict.
"The family called because they wanted to address the media," O'Mara told ABC. "I knew that if we did it in an organized way, it would help them get back to a normal life. But they called today and said they were more worried about blow back from saying anything that would be favorable to George, and decided they did not want to do any media."
The Seminole City Sheriff's Office, where the press conference was to have taken place, said the family "expressed to us that they are not comfortable doing media interviews at this time and they continue to ask for privacy."
Last Wednesday, Zimmerman pulled the couple and their two young children from the wreck after their SUV rolled over in Sanford, Fla. The one-time neighborhood watch member was driving past with another man, and joined in the rescue. Until the accident, Zimmerman, 29, hadn't been seen since a court in Sanford cleared him of second-degree murder charges.
Zimmerman's name isn't in the accident report from the July 17 incident, which took place less than a mile from where Martin was shot. Police said he did not see the accident occur, and that he left after speaking with officers.
But Gerstle recognized Zimmerman as he pulled him from the driver's seat of his SUV, and officers noted Zimmerman made sure the man and his family were safe before leaving the scene.
The Gerstles, who live in Port Orange, Fla., have refused all interviews about their encounter, and a neighbor said while Mark Gerstle is probably very grateful to Zimmerman, he's also a "very quiet man and will not like having his name mentioned all over the press. He is not the type you will see on a chat show talking about what happened."
Friends of the couple said they're concerned about the threat of violence against the family. The Black Panthers have put out a bounty for Zimmerman and the Gerstles' friends are concerned other violent threats will spread to the family as well.
"Let's face it, George Zimmerman is pretty toxic right now," said a friend. "Mark has two young children and has got to live his life round here. Whatever he says could be taken out of context. If he praises Zimmerman then people will say he is making him into a hero. It is easier if he says nothing."

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ? A person with knowledge of the situation says Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller will miss the first month of the season for violating the NFL's drug policy, pending an appeal.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league hasn't announced any punishment.
ESPN first reported the pending discipline of Miller, who didn't answer calls to his cellphone Monday from The Associated Press.
The league has a confidentiality clause on such cases. Broncos spokesman Patrick Smyth said the team is unable to provide any comment.

If you get a new Windows 8 computer, you might be surprised to find out that it won't play your DVDs as Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, omitted this feature in the new version of the OS. Although optical media is going the way of the VHS tape, there's a lot of content out there that's not available for streaming or in compatible video formats. Hare are five free apps to get around the lack of native Windows DVD playback and let you enjoy your DVD collection.
Arguably the most popular free and open source utility for playing a plethora of video and music file formats on Windows and Mac (including DVDs of course) is VLC. After installing this free program, it will be added to the context menu in Windows 8, so you can right click any music or video file to play it. Or you can set up AutoPlay to launch your DVD in VLC when you insert the disc. VLC offers plenty of playback options for the basic user, advanced features for the power user who wants to stream the DVD over a home network, and more.
VLC for Mac, Windows and Linux
Another popular free desktop program that will play DVDs on Windows 8, and virtually every media file that VLC can, is GOM Player. It works similarly to other media players, and some would argue it provides a more crisp picture when viewing DVDs. It too has an insane amount of features available to tweak so you can get the perfect playback experience. It also has an official remote control app for iOS and Android devices.
GOM isn't open source and I'd be remiss if I didn't bring up that during the install it tries to install bundled crapware. Usually it's either AVG or Ask toolbar. Just uncheck the option when installing as Windows 8 already has built-in antivirus protection via Windows Defender, and you definitely don't need a worthless toolbar like Ask.com cluttering up your browsers.
GOM Player for Windows
Like VLC, KMPlayer is a versatile open source multimedia application for playing DVDs on Windows 8. And like both VLC and GOM, it contains its own internal codecs and is able to play virtually any media file you throw at it. It's fast, and doesn't take up a lot of computer resources. It was recently purchased by Pandora and has new features to organize video, music, cover art, and an upcoming app store.
KMPlayer
If you're looking for a complete media center program, check out XBMC. It's free and open source and has a stack community of developers behind it. The latest version plays DVDs right out of the box from the main menu. Then you have plenty of options and settings for optimizing quality playback of DVDs.
XBMC is gaining a lot of popularity as it provides several ways to enjoy your local digital media collection, stream online video and music, and it's compatible on many platforms including Windows, iPad, Android, OS X, Raspberry Pi, the Ouya game console and several others.
XBMC Media Center
Daum PotPlayer is currently in beta and it feels a lot like KMPlayer, which is no big surprise considering it's from the same developer. As with the others in this list, it supports DVD playback as well as a large number of file video and audio file formats. It also supports Blu-ray playback, so if you're looking for a free program for Blu-ray, PotPlayer is a good choice.
Daum PotPlayer
All five of these programs are fairly similar, and work great for playing DVDs on Windows 8. However, the main thing you need to look out for on a few of them is the extra bundled software they try to throw in. So definitely make sure you're paying attention during the installation process. If you like to customize your Windows experience, you should know that all of these players can be skinned with different custom themes.
One program I didn't mention here is Windows 8 Media Player. It's no longer included in Windows 8, and it isn't free anymore either. It was free for a short time when the new OS was initially released for US$39.99. But now it's an extra add-on which will only work on Windows 8 Pro and will cost you $9.99. The company is definitely phasing out Media Player and pushing its new Xbox video and music services. Because of this, the aforementioned alternatives end up being great free replacements.
Also, if your computer came with a bunch of extra bloatware from the manufacturer, chances are it has DVD playback software which you can always use. But if you're an experienced user, I recommend one or all of these five options because they have a lot more power user options packed into them.

Another weekend is upon us, and that means once again it is time for the iMore team to share some of their favorite apps. We've got a broad spread this week, with a couple of useful Mac apps alongside a couple of iOS games and a couple of productivity tools. Let's take a look.
In Breach & Clear, you choose and direct a four-man team of soldiers, completing a series of tactical missions in locations across the globe. The levels see your team breaching various buildings, moving room to room to clear out enemies. Each mission takes place in several phases where you select the next position each of your soldiers will take. Positioning is key in Breach & Clear, as rushing through the planning of each phase could leave one or more of your soldiers vulnerable to enemy fire.
The game also features a robust customization system. Customize the role each of your squad members takes, like Medic, Breacher, Fire Team Leader, or Direct Action. Each role comes with specific abilities, such as sprinting or laying down suppressing fire. Spend the in-game money you earn from each mission on modifications for your weapon, everything from sights, grips, and suppressors, anything that could give your soldiers the edge over the enemy. Breach & Clear is 50% off to celebrate its launch, so if you're interested, grab it at $1.99 now.
As much as I hate apps that try and nickel and dime you to death, I can't seem to stop playing Simpsons: Tapped Out. I recently spent some time letting users in on some tips, tricks, and cheats and it got me back in to actually playing it again.
The premise is simple. Homer blew up Springfield and you've got to help him and Lisa rebuild it. From picking up trash to building houses and running stores, you'll have to collect donuts and cash in order to earn items.
Donuts are rare and can be expensive in real money so you'll either have to be super patient or willing to pony up some cash. Unless you're a jailbreaker and happen to stumble across the unlimited donuts cheat. But we don't talk about that here?
IFTTT is an enormously useful Web site that lets its users craft "Recipes" to trigger actions, in the form of a basic structure: If [This] Then [That] (hence the service's name). Now it's available as an iOS app, and it's even more useful, because it taps into content that the Web site can't touch, like your contact database, photos and reminders. IFTTT will keep an eye on a variety of Web-based services and will help you get the most out of them. You can create Recipes for all sorts of things - automatically saving iOS photos to your Dropbox, for example, or adding your Foursquare checkin history to your Google Calendar, so you can look later at where you've been. In this case, I've created a Recipe that tells IFTTT to post to my App Dot Net account whenever my Instagram stream gets updated with a new photo.
IFTTT has limitations, of course. A lot of depends on what each service allows third-party apps to do, or whether they have an API that a tool like IFTTT can access to begin with. And there certainly may be limits to the amount of exposure you want to give an app/service like IFTTT to, because it's expecting pretty liberal access to your various accounts to get things done. It's easy to get frustrated - especially with the need to log in to each individual service to authenticate IFTTT to work. But once you're up and running and have a sense of what you can do, IFTTT can be a real time saver, especially if you want to put a lot out on social media but don't necessarily want to spend a lot of time doing it. IFTTT's developers have promised that new functionality is in the works.
Xscope, a Mac app by the Iconfactory, is a great tool for any design, professional and enthusiast alike. He does a lot of amazing things which likely appeal to people far more sophisticated than I, but it also does some simple things I use all the time. For example, there's a tool that just measures how long and high areas are in pixels. Before Xscope, I'd use the OS X screenshot tool for that, and then have to delete the screenshot. With Xscope, I just turn it on, measure, and turn it off.
It also includes mirror, so you can check designs on iOS devices, the aforementioned dimensions and rulers, screen overlays for testing designs with iOS interface elements, a big old magnifying loupe, alignment guides, marker boxes, and crosshairs.
It's a serious tool, for getting serious work done. I keep it running almost all the time. And it's just been updated to version 3.6.1., so if you're testing OS X Mavericks you'll be happy about that.
There is a ton of great apps out there they are web based or otherwise known as 'web apps'. For some folks, web apps are fine but for me I don't always like to have to turn to my browser to use something. It's weird, I know. But I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way so I bring to you, Fluid App. It's basically an app that can take any web site URL and turn it into an app of its own, right down to including an icon in your applications folder. Run Fluid App, enter the URL and decide where to place it. It's that easy. The app is available for free or as an paid app with a few unlocked features but i've found the free version works just fine. It is however, not available in the app store, it's a direct download from the developer site which you'll find below.
AirDrop for Mac is great, and AirDrop for iOS 7 looks like it could be great too, but the two don't appear lined up to work together as things stand. That's a shame, but there's a great third-party client on the market that will already replicate much of the AirDrop functionality. It's called Instashare, and is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and versions for Windows and Android are also in the works.
It also works pretty much the same as AirDrop, with a simple drag and drop mechanism. You need to be within the Instashare app for it to work, but with the Mac client installed sending things between the two is simple. It works both ways too, is free to download (though for a small in-app purchase you can go ad-free) and I'm now so happy firing photos from my iPhone to my Mac with a couple of taps.

It was a sight Nebraska fans never thought they would see again. During Bill Callahan?s tenure, Texas Tech shocked Nebraska by notching 70 points against the Blackshirts in 2004. And in 2007, Kansas hung 76 points on the Blackshirts, driving the final nail into the coffin of Callahan?s tenure in Lincoln.
In came?defensive mastermind.?Bo Pelini.?He shepherded Nebraska into a B1G title game in NU?s second conference season and appeared to get a fortunate draw. Nebraska faced Wisconsin, a 7-5 team that finished third in the Leaders Division (behind ineligible Ohio State and Penn State) and a team that Nebraska had already beaten earlier in the season.
Nebraska fans, then, had every reason to think that the conference title drought might finally come to an end. At the very least, they had every reason to think the game should be competitive with Nebraska having a chance to win at the end.
What they got, instead, was an evisceration. Wisconsin moved the ball and scored at will against a hapless Nebraska defense. The Badgers rushed for 539 yards and averaged a staggering 10.8 yards per carry against the Blackshirts.
If Nebraska fans were certain of anything, it was that the dark days of Callahan and defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove were over and that they would never have to endure humiliations like Texas Tech and Kansas again. Wisconsin demonstrated that, even in year five of Pelini?s tenure, Nebraska was still quite vulnerable to ugly and embarrassing losses.

Having grown up in Appleton as a huge fan of the University of Wisconsin football team, Chris Gill is keenly aware of the story behind Mark Tauscher?s senior year with the Badgers.
In fact, Tauscher is a family friend of Gill and his four older brothers.
Tauscher was set to transfer to Youngstown State in Ohio for his final year of eligibility, wanting to become a teacher.
Jim Hueber, who was the UW offensive line coach at the time, didn?t even know Tauscher had a year of eligibility remaining before running into him at the Kentucky Derby and convincing him to finish his career with the Badgers.
Tauscher became the starting right tackle during the 1999 Rose Bowl season before going on to a successful NFL career as a starter with the Green Bay Packers.
Now, along comes Gill, who spent the past four seasons at Mississippi, including a redshirt year in 2009, prior to graduating.
After a casual conversation between one of Gill?s brothers and a member of the UW athletic communication department, Gill has transferred to UW, where he will be a walk-on center and eligible to play his final year in 2013.
He was accepted into a masters program for Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis on Tuesday and joined his new teammates for summer workouts on Thursday.
?It?s been kind of a crazy path to get here, but I?m so thankful I?ve got this opportunity,? Gill said ?Friday.
The 23-year-old Gill, 6-foot-4, 295 pounds, appeared in two games at Ole Miss, both coming last season. ?
The Badgers have an alarming lack of depth on the offensive line and Gill is capable of playing center, guard or tackle. He will start out at center behind redshirt freshman Dan Voltz, the projected starter.
?Wherever they need me, I?m more than happy to play,? Gill said.
Nobody is expecting Gill to become another Tauscher, but the stories have much in common.
?(Tauscher) is an unbelievable guy and an unbelievable player,? Gill said. ?I would never want to parallel myself to someone of his caliber. I really do hope the season is a lot of fun and I?m sure we?ll do great as a team.?
Gill?s path to UW started with a conversation between Ben, an older brother, and Patrick Herb, the main media contact for UW men?s basketball. Herb grew up in Appleton and was a roommate in college with Ben.
Chris planned to go to law school in Florida?.
?I was already enrolled and about to go, but I?ve been missing football a whole lot,? Chris said.
Greg Sr. and Cathie Gill have five boys ? and the first four all earned varsity letters at UW.
In order from the oldest: Greg Jr. was an All-American decathlete; Patrick was a linebacker who played for Barry Alvarez and earned a letter during the 1998 Rose Bowl season; Ben was All-Big Ten honorable mention in the decathlon; and Barry was a middle distance runner who earned All-Big Ten honorable mention as part of a relay.
Chris desperately wanted to play for the Badgers, but was undersized at 240 pounds after graduating from Appleton Xavier and didn?t get an offer.
?It was a little disappointing,? Chris said. ?I would have loved to play for the home state, it?s always been a dream.?
Among his offers were Colorado State, as well as the Naval and Air Force academies, but he elected to go to Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., for three months to increase his exposure.
The Southeastern Conference recruits that school heavily and Chris signed with Ole Miss, where his dad went to law school.
?He really liked playing for Houston Nutt,? Greg Sr. said. ?We?ve got nothing but great things to say about him.?
Chris played under offensive line coach Mike Markuson for three seasons. Markuson was hired as UW?s offensive line coach last season but fired after the second game. Two torn meniscus cartilage injuries stalled Chris? development early in his career, though he was healthy last season.
Nutt was fired after the 2011 season and replaced by Hugh Freeze, who decided to go with younger players on the line. If that had not happened, Chris probably would have played his final year at Ole Miss, his dad said.
Herb contacted UW cornerbacks coach Ben Strickland, who recruits in the state, after the conversation with Ben. Given UW?s need at the position, it seemed like a perfect marriage between Chris and the Badgers.
?I told him, ?You can go to law school any time you want, you can?t (play football) again,? ? Greg Sr. said. ?They?re glad to have an experienced, mature young man. Chris is a great student. Houston Nutt kind of summed it up when he said he was the most coachable kid he ever had. I think (UW coaches) are looking for some maturity, dependability, someone who?s not going to get rattled.?
?Nobody knows if this story will end as well as Tauscher?s did, but given the Gill family?s ties to UW, it?s already a good tale. The entire family is already making plans to attend as many games as possible.
?It?s a lot less expensive to drive to Madison to have beers and brats than fly to Oxford (Miss.) and get a condo for the week and drink wine and (eat) cheese,? Greg Sr. said.
