POSITION PLAYERSBest Pure Hitter: OF Nick Williams (2) baffled scouts with an inconsistent spring, then hit .313 in his pro debut. He has excellent bat speed, a knack for barreling balls and good hitting instincts. Best Power Hitter: 3B Joey Gallo (1s) had the best raw power in the entire draft and can make a claim to having the most in the minor leagues. He hit 22 homers and slugged .660 in his pro debut. OF Lewis Brinson (1) won the home run derby at the 2011 Under Armour All-America Game. Williams also has above-average pop. Fastest Runner:Brinson is a well above-average runner with long, gliding strides. He runs the 60-yard dash in 6.5 seconds. Best Defensive Player: Stony Brook made a shocking run to the College World Series, thanks in part to C/1B Pat Cantwell (3), whose blue-collar work ethic reminds scouts of Pat Borders. Cantwell has good hands and feet to go with solid arm strength, and his toughness and intelligence help his tools play up behind the dish. Brinson covers a lot of ground in center field.
PITCHERS
Best Fastball: RHP Keone Kela (12) threw 89-91 mph when the Mariners drafted him in the 29th round out of high school in 2011, worked at 91-95 mph last spring at Everett (Wash.) CC and was up to 96-100 mph during instructional league. He has good athleticism and cleaned up his delivery after signing, which also improved his control. RHP Alec Asher (4) consistently hits the mid-90s. Best Secondary Pitch: RHP Collin Wiles (1s) has good feel for his 72-74 mph curveball. The pitch shows tight rotation and should continue to firm up as he gets stronger.
ODDS AND ENDS
Best Pro Debut:Gallo broke the Rookie-level Arizona League home run record with 18 in just 43 games on his way to winning the league MVP award. His 22 homers ranked fourth among Rangers minor leaguers in just a half season. Best Athlete: Brinson draws Cameron Maybin comparisons and shows five-tool ability. OF Jamie Jarmon (2) and Williams also have a wide array of tools. Most Intriguing Background: Unsigned OF Jameis Winston (15) was one of college football's top quarterback recruits and one of the baseball draft's best pure athletes. He headed to Florida State, which has also signed baseball/QB standouts Chris Weinke, Danny Kanell, Joe Mauer and D'Vontrey Richardson. Closest To The Majors: There's no obvious candidate because Texas signed so many toolsy but raw players. OF Preston Beck (5) is the only college draftee who received a six-figure bonus. Best Late-Round Pick:Kela. The Rangers will see if he can transition to a starter in 2013. The One Who Got Away: Texas took several high-profile high school players later in the draft but ran out of money to sign them. In addition to Winston, LHP Alex Young (32, Texas Christian) and RHP Ryan Burr (33, Arizona State) had early-round talent.
