When I found Sarah Wilson?s I Quit Sugar eBook I couldn?t believe it! Someone was actually making quitting sugar cool, how cool is that!

?I was a little unsure of how many recipes from the cookbook I would be able to eat (given my no meat, no dairy and no egg food habits) but I am pleased to let you know there are many vegetarian and vegan recipes and lots more that can be made vegan with some slight tweaking.

I tried out this recipe and loved it!

Chia Puddings

Ask the Matriarch - Preparing People for a Retirement Facility

Our question this week regards the challenging issue of helping people make a major life transition, one that can often be accompanied with complex emotions, especially if not everyone in the family is ready for it. Our colleague asks:

How do you help your seniors prepare to move to a retirement facility? How would you advise a couple if one is ready for a retirement home and the other is not?

Crimson Rambler responds:

The question of seniors moving to a retirement facility is a daunting one.? In my own experience, it is complicated (often negatively) by the affectionate concern of family members (whose elders feel some sort of Moral Imperative to resist their suggestions, their arguments, their strategies, because, after all, THEY weren't through the war, what do THEY know???); and (often positively) by the example and the Very Forthright advice of their contemporaries ~~ "and I said to her, Clara, I said, you have a choice: you go into Somerset Manor and have a lovely apartment and all your meals, OR you are facing THIRD FLOOR SHADY PINES.? Now which is it going to be?"? The minister often is enlisted by the family to "talk sense into Mother" -- but unless the minister is also a contemporary, she can be quickly boxed with the know-nothing non-veteran offspring.? (I'm making light of this because I've been in just exactly this position.) So how do we help them prepare?? By listening -- listening to their children's frustration, listening to the seniors' apprehensions, grief, anger.? And by recruiting contemporaries to maintain the links that have been built up while the seniors were in their own homes.? And by transportation: I have learned that it is a kinder action, often to collect Mrs. A and take her to visit Mrs. B, than to visit Mrs. A and Mrs. B oneself, solo.? The line here is: "I'm going to leave you girls to get caught up, and I'll be back in about three-quarters of an hour, and then we can have our Communion all together -- how would that be?"? Because they always have much more to say to each other than I (not having been through the war) can possibly have. You can also encourage your senior to find out whether there are folks among the new neighbours who would enjoy a monthly informal worship service, a hymn sing or Holy Communion.? Some folks will do this spontaneously, phoning to say, "Well, I've found fifteen Anglicans, and I made them promise to come on Sunday if you can come and do a service for us in the afternoon!" When the situation involves a couple needing different levels of care and assistance, the ministry of transportation becomes even more acutely necessary. The important thing is to find ways to demonstrate that their church's love and care for them do not cease when they move into a less independent living arrangement. I'll be most interested to hear what other RevGals' experience has been! This can be an easy task, or a more difficult one. I have helped move people into retirement homes where they have a lot of autonomy and I have helped move people into locked units due to cognitive and memory loss issues?and everything in between. By and large most of my effort has actually gone toward supporting the family members who are facilitating the move. I also visit people in retirement homes all the time and find that I end up being a local contact for long-distant family members who want to know that their loved one is okay.? In terms of helping the actual person making the decision to move- my role is usually one of information provider ? I share what I know and have heard about the local facilities. I let them know which ones people like and why. I let them know, if they don?t already, who lives in the facility and who can offer them more inside information. I try to help them make informed decisions. If the couple is in a stalemate because one wants to move and the other does not I listen as each one discusses their reasoning and then hope they are able to make a good decision. Again, I would probably advise them to make some site visits and talk to people about any facility they were considering, so they can make informed decisions. As I said above, often my role is one of supporting the family ? so this would be true as well if one member of a couple needed make the decision to separate as a couple because the other member of the couple needed to live in an assisted living facility for memory loss issues. What I can?t do is make the decision for them, I can only offer a listening ear and some support, perhaps a little inside information from my visits to the local facilities. Generally I have found that when people are ready to move they do, and they end up really liking it. In a retirement community they find people like themselves and plenty of activities to keep them busy. Occasionally people make the move and then shut down and enter a slow decline, but that is rare, usually people thrive and find new life. I let people know this as part of their decision making process.

And Kathrynzj writes:

This is a timely question. With all of the family, financial, physical and emotional issues wrapped up in a move away from a home to a community it is pastoral care that is filled with land mines. We live in an area heavy with a variety of senior living options so there are a wide variety represented in our congregation. Encouraging conversations between those who are already there and the ones thinking about moving there can be helpful. Some of them have restaurants open to the public as well.?

Particles point way for Voyager

Scientists working on Voyager 1 are receiving further data suggesting the probe is close to crossing into interstellar space.

The Nasa mission, which launched from Earth in 1977, could leave our Solar System at any time.

It is now detecting a sharp rise in the number of high-energy particles hitting it from distant exploded stars.

The observation was predicted, and is another indication that Voyager will soon reach its historic goal.

"The laws of physics say that someday Voyager will become the first human-made object to enter interstellar space, but we still do not know exactly when that someday will be," Ed Stone, the Voyager project scientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said in a Nasa statement.

"The latest data indicate that we are clearly in a new region where things are changing more quickly. It is very exciting. We are approaching the Solar System's frontier."

Voyager 1 is travelling at about 17 km per second (38,000 mph), and is almost 18 billion km (11 billion miles) from Earth.

The vast separation means a signal from the probe takes more than 16 and a half hours to arrive at Nasa's receiving network.

In the last three years, Voyager has seen a steady increase in the number of cosmic rays entering its two high-energy telescopes, but in the past month the counts have jumped markedly.

Nasa's Voyager probes

  • Voyager 2 launched on 20 August 1977; Voyager 1 lifted off on 5 September the same year
  • Their official missions were to study Jupiter and Saturn, but the probes were able to continue on
  • The Voyager 1 probe is now the furthest human-built object from Earth
  • Both probes carry discs with recordings designed to portray the diversity of culture on Earth

The cosmic ray count is one of three indicators Nasa is using to determine when the probe has moved to interstellar space.

The second is a change in the intensity of the energetic particles Voyager detects around it coming from our Sun.

The number of these hits is declining, but not dramatically so, which should happen when Voyager leaves the region of space dominated by our star.

A third indicator will be a change in the direction of the magnetic field lines. These are expected to undergo a major reorientation when Voyager breaks into interstellar space.

Voyager 1 was launched on 5 September 1977, and its sister spacecraft, Voyager 2, on 20 August 1977.

The probes' initial goal was to survey the outer planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, a task they completed in 1989.

They were then despatched towards deep space, in the general direction of the centre of our Milky Way Galaxy.

Their plutonium power sources will stop generating electricity in about 10-15 years, at which point their instruments and transmitters will die.

The Voyagers will then become "silent ambassadors" from Earth as they move through the Milky Way.

Voyager 1 is on course to approach a star called AC +793888, but it will only get to within two light-years of it.

Voyager 2 was launched before Voyager 1 and was put on a slower path to interstellar space. It is currently 14.7 billion km from Earth.

It is hurtling towards a star named Ross 248, but, again, even at its closest, it will still be a whole light-year away.

Taking Aspirin May Help Lower Risk of Skin Cancer | Blog ...

A new study found that people who take aspirin regularly may lower their risk for skin cancer.

Researchers from Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark found that people taking aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, were less likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

For the skin cancer study, researchers examined all cancer cases in the Danish Cancer Registry from 1991 to 2009. They compared it to data from a prescription-drug database, which recorded patients? histories of taking aspirin and NSAIDs.

The researchers found that those who filled more than two aspirin or NSAID prescriptions during the time period were 15% less likely to develop squamous cell skin cancer and 13% less likely to develop melanoma compared to those who filled two or fewer aspirin or NSAID prescriptions during the same time.

Those who took the drugs longer and at higher doses saw the greatest benefits. For instance, this type of usage lowered the risk of melanoma by 46% and of squamous cell carcinoma by 35%.

?Given the high skin cancer incidence and the widespread and frequent use of NSAIDs, a preventive effect of these agents may have important public health implications,? the researchers wrote in the study, which was published in the journal?Cancer.

While there is growing evidence that taking aspirin regularly may lower your risk of cancer, always talk with your doctor before taking the drug, as it can have side effects on the digestive tract and stomach.

?We hope that the potential cancer-protective effect of NSAIDs will inspire more research on skin cancer prevention,? lead researcher Sigrun Alba Johannesdottir said in a statement. ?Also, this potential cancer-protective effect should be taken into account when discussing benefits and harms of NSAID use.?

Even if your doctor recommends aspirin for your health regimen, remember that using sunscreen and avoiding burns are two of the best ways to reduce your risk of skin cancer and keep your skin looking its best.

New documents leaked after arrest of pope's butler

Alessandro Bianchi / Reuters file

Paolo Gabriele, Pope Benedict XVI's butler, is accused of leaking documents alleging Vatican corruption, but new documents published Sunday? after his arrest last month ? suggest he may be a scapegoat.

By M. Alex Johnson, msnbc.com

Pope Benedict XVI's butler, who is under arrest for allegedly leaking confidential Vatican documents, is just a scapegoat, according to the source of new secret documents published Sunday by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

The butler, Paolo Gabriele, 45, remains in a Vatican jail cell on charges of aggravated theft for possessing confidential correspondence. Publication of the new documents Sunday ? which La Repubblica said it had received from an unknown person after Gabriele's arrest on May 25 ? would strongly indicate that Gabriele wasn't the only person with access to the secret correspondence of the Roman Catholic Church.

The documents lay bare the political machinations among cardinals posted to the Vatican, suggesting an administration riven by infighting over which Benedict, 85, has ? or chooses to exercise ? little authority.

In a letter accompanying the three new documents, the shadowy provider calls Gabriele "the usual scapegoat" and says his or her intention is to "drive out the real culprits from the Vatican," whom the letter identifies as Msgr. Georg Gaenswein, Benedict's personal secretary, and Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, his secretary of state.

The source warns that the new papers are just "three of the hundreds of documents in our possession" that could be damaging to the Vatican.

The documents published Sunday include two written on Gaenswein's personal letterhead. The text, however, had been whited out ? a step the source said he or she had taken to protect the pope. In the accompanying cover letter, the source says the documents prove that Benedict is being served by an "inept staff."

Gaenswein has greatly increased his influence in the Vatican in recent years, according to La Republicca, and is one of the pope's closest confidants. The letters, if authenticated, could suggest that even the most sensitive Vatican documents have been compromised.

The third document is a letter to Bertone from Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, an American who is head of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura ? in essence, the Vatican's chief justice.

It is marked "highly confidential" and registers Burke's dismay that Benedict had approved the liturgy of a controversial lay group known as the NeoCatechumenal Way, which its critics contend violates the prescribed protocol for the Catholic Mass.

"I believe that approval of such liturgical innovations ... does not seem consistent with the liturgical teachings of the Pope," Burke wrote.
