Rockford community says goodbye to 4 killed in fire - WREX.com ...

More than 200 people come out to say goodbye to a Rockford family killed after a fire tore through their home. The focus of the memorial was really about this family's love for each other.

Sharon Cashatt was known for creating a special family through adoption and foster care. Plus, her willingness, along with her family's, to love and care for the people who came into their life impacted so many people.

"Let us learn from the lives of these 4 individuals, each unique but willing to take a chance that they might make a new friend, or even another family member," says Pastor Jay Quinn, Trinity Lutheran Church.

Monday, January 7, Sharon Cashatt, 61; her special needs son Douglas Cashatt, 21; her grandson Dominick Cashatt, 13; and her great grand-daughter Isabella Gonzalez who was just 10-months-old died at a fire in their Rockford home.

During the memorial, family members talked about how Isabella was just learning how to walk. Douglas loved food more than anything and Dominick was really the man of the family, always watching after his grandmother. Dominick's friends from middle school and scouts filled the pews at Trinity Lutheran Church to remember him.

"Caring, big hearted, you could tell him anything he didn't care what it was he would always try to make you happy," says Salvador Stoneberg, 12.

"He was always happy, I've never seen him in a bad mood or angry at someone," says Cameron Morhardt, 12.

"We will all miss him forever, you can't really put that into words," says Ashlyn Horton, 12.

As for Sharon, she was the glue who held the family together. Her son says he was lucky she adopted him.

"Thank you for being my mother and taking me home," says Patrick Cashatt.

Sharon and Dominick were buried. Isabella and Douglas were cremated. Douglas' ashes were put in Sharon's casket so he could always be with his mom.

A fund to help cover funeral costs is still collecting donations. You can give at any Alpine Bank location just ask for the Cashatt Family Memorial Fund.
