White House, Romney assail Iran comments on Israel

Iran's threatening comments about Israel's existence is spilling over into the presidential campaign, with both the White House and Republican Mitt Romney responding to the sharp attacks against the Jewish state.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (ah-muh-DEE'-neh-zhahd) says Israel's existence was an "insult to all humanity."

Israel considers Iran an existential threat because of its nuclear and missile programs.

The White House strongly condemned the Iranian leader's remarks, calling the comments "offensive and reprehensible" and urged Iran to stop supporting the Syrian government.

Romney called the comments "outrageous," saying the U.S. "must lead the world in stopping Iran's genocidal regime" from obtaining nuclear weapons. GOP running mate Paul Ryan said under a Romney White House, "our adversaries will think twice about challenging America and our allies."
