Learn About the Iditarod Race and Dog Mushing in Alaska

In Alaska, the official state sport is dog sled racing. Alaskans have always appreciated the reliability and historic value of the old ways of dog sledding. Mechanical transportation such as snow machines and snow mobiles are of course very important to the people of Alaska, but many still keep their own dog teams. Some folks like to keep 2 to 10 sled dogs simply for the joy of recreational mushing, while other keep their teams for working and sled racing competition.

The celebration of Alaskan dog sled racing and mushing racing ranges from the local club meets to the world championships. These races are held throughout the winter months. The mushing races use teams of 7-16 dogs. The teams are not allowed to replace any dog during the race and the cumulative times for the heats determine the winner. Speed races are normally run for about 12-30 miles and last about two to three days. Much excitement accompanies these events. Long distance races are probably the most famous ones of all. They include the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod.

These dog teams and their mushers not only compete against the other teams, but they also have to contend with the harsh elements of the Alaskan countryside. Sometimes a musher and his dog team can find themselves in the middle of a dangerous snow storm. If this happen, winning the race may take a backseat and survival in turn becomes a priority. It is reported in the past races that some mushers would sacrifice their chances of winning to help out a fellow musher and his dogs that unfortunately got stranded in the killer storm and needed help. There are other perils along the trail however. Moose will attack the dogs, and straying off course can both become problems. Also, an illness of the musher or his dogs is possible, and the sheer exhaustion and physical exertion of the race can certainly take its toll.

Of all the dog sled races, the Iditarod race probably gets the most national press and is the most known by Americans and people from all over the world. It follows the old mail route which started in Knik, just north of Anchorage and continued northwest to finish in Nome. This old mail route was blazed in 1910. The modern Iditarod race runs about 1,100 miles and crosses two mountain ranges. It also follows the Yukon River for about 150 miles and runs through several villages. The trail even crosses the pack ice on Norton Sound! As you can imagine, this race is truly a test of physical and mental strength and determination! With all of the obstacles that a musher and his dogs must face and overcome, you can imagine the thrill and excitement of the winner and all of the other teams who ran and/or finished this historic race!One of the most famous runs of all on this old mail trail took place in 1925 when Leonhard Seppala and his dog team brought thousands of precious units of the life-saving Diphtheria serum to Nome, Alaska where an epidemic broke out. Nowadays, snowmobiles and helicopters replace the dog sled for this job, but at that time, the brash and brave lifesaving run by Seppala was a godsend to the distressed people of Nome.

The Iditarod race was conceived and organized in 1967 by Joe Redington Sr. and Dorothy Page of Wasilla, Alaska. The first races only covered 56 miles, but then in 1973 it was lengthened to today?s 1,100 miles. In 1973, the Iditarod race started in Anchorage on March 3rd. It ended on April 3rd in Nome. This race has been run every year since then. Several years later, Congress designated the Iditarod race as a National Historic Trail in 1976. Dog mushing and the Iditarod race in Alaska bring a romantic notion in people?s minds about the old ways of survival and transportation in the far north. It is reassuring to know that dog mushers and their wonderful and brave dog teams are still running the trails today. The special reminder of this tradition is the Iditarod race, which forged its own place in American history.

Tom, if Kansas finds itself in a similar position as in Columbia, with a late lead, do you keep the ball in Tyshawn Taylor?s hands or do you put it in someone else?s?

Tom Keegan: Keep it in Taylor?s hands.

He?s the team?s primary ballhandler, with Elijah Johnson having it next most, and to suddenly change that just because of what happened in Columbia would be silly. For one thing, it would be telling Taylor, the team?s best player in Big 12 play, that you don?t believe in him. For another, there?s a reason Taylor has the ball in his hands more than anybody on the team. He?s the guy who makes the offense go. He makes his team?s fans sweat more than a lot of point guards, but he makes the defense sweat more than any guard in the country.

JN: I was surprised quite a bit when I heard the Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy on the radio a few weeks ago saying that, because of Taylor's free throw woes late, that KU should take him out of any game where an opponent was in an obvious fouling situation.

We've known from the beginning of the year that this KU's team's success would most likely be tied to how well Taylor and Thomas Robinson play. In my mind, there's no way you take two guys out of the game in that situation, no matter how many free throws they might miss in previous games.

As you stated above, that would also have a huge psychological effect on a player that does care quite a bit about what his coach thinks.

Even in obvious fouling situations, a team is still going to pressure, so you still need ball-handlers on the floor. Taylor should (and will) be out there during crunch time in every game for KU the rest of the season, provided he doesn't foul out.

Tom, in your mind, who deserves to be coach of the year in the Big 12 if Kansas wins this game?

TK: Bill Self.

Coming into the season, Taylor had played more minutes for Kansas than the rest of the roster combined. Think about that statistic. That shows you that although the starting five is a veteran one, with four juniors and a senior, it?s not one that had a lot of game experience until this season.

Self obviously is very good at getting his players to do what he wants them to do at both ends and knows how to motivate them to play hard. To be able to do that without having the carrot of playing time to dangle in front of the starting five ? he can?t threaten them with benching them because there are no serious options in reserve ? in many ways makes this Self?s most remarkable coaching job. Missouri?s Frank Haith and Iowa State?s Fred Hoiberg also have done terrific jobs with their teams.

JN: I think Bill Self is the best coach in the Big 12. But I still think Frank Haith will win the award.

Here's the difference between the two: KU was picked to tie for the conference title, while MU was picked fifth. And those votes were tallied before MU announced that forward Laurence Bowers would miss the year with a torn ACL.

The way Haith transformed the Tigers' offense has been remarkable. MU's guards have turned in shots off the dribble for mostly catch-and-shoot opportunities, and that change has helped MU become the top offensive team (efficiency-wise) in the nation.

Just look at all the players who have taken dramatic leaps forward this year: Kim English, Ricardo Ratliffe, Phil Pressey and Steve Moore, to name a few.

MU's defense isn't close to KU's, and Haith's recruiting probably won't match up to Self's, either. But for this season, Haith's gotten just as much improvement out of his players as Self has gotten out of his Jayhawks.

I think Haith's lower expectations coming in will sway those voters who might be trying to decide between the two.

OK, Tom, what's your prediction for this game?

TK: Kansas by 12.

Missouri outscored Kansas, 22-2, in roughly the final four minutes of the first half and the last two minutes of the game. Other than that, Kansas did what it wanted offensively, with Taylor getting to the hoop for buckets and with Thomas Robinson getting fed regularly. Missouri doesn?t have the post defense to win this game and its best chance lies in forcing turnovers.

JN: I'll take KU by nine.

Last KU-MU game was decided by a charge (or five of them), and MU's flopping defense shouldn't work as well Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.

Plus, I can't see the Tigers shooting as well as they did in the first matchup against the Jayhawks. MU's 1.1 points per possession were the most scored against KU this season, and I just don't see the Tigers replicating that kind of offensive effort.

After watching Marcus Denmon break out of a slump for 29 points in the first matchup, you can bet that KU will have some sort of gameplan for defending the senior guard.

Releford is KU's best bet to stick with him. The junior has had great home defensive performances against Ohio State (William Buford) and Kansas State (Rodney McGruder), and I think we'll see another good effort from him Saturday to help shut down MU's quick-trigger guard.

World's tiniest chameleon: How did it get so small?

Scientists recently discovered four new species of chameleons in Madagascar. One of them ? Brookesia micra ??is the smallest chameleon in the world. This species may have evolved through a phenomenon known as island dwarfism.

A group of scientists have done just that. They found four new species of chameleon in Northern Madagascar including the world's smallest, Brookesia micra. Adults reach a size of just over an inch long, making it one of the world's smallest vertebrates.

Needless to say, it was difficult to locate the chameleons during the day while they were active. But, with the help of flashlights, the scientists spotted them sleeping at night on plants a few inches off the ground.

Brookesia micra may be the world's smallest lizard, but it's not the smallest vertebrate. Holding this title is a frog from Papua New Guinea?that measures about a third of an inch. The miniscule frog, Paedophryne amanuensis,?broke the record held by a slightly larger-sized swamp-dwelling fish from Indonesia.

There is some controversy surrounding this title, as there exists an anglerfish native to the?Philippines?that can be as small as a quarter of an inch. But this fish is a parasite, spending its adult life attached to the female of its species. ?

How did this chameleon get so small? One explanation?is a theory known as island dwarfism. This size adaptation can occur for a variety of reasons on islands such as Madagascar. Smaller animals need to consume fewer resources to survive and reproduce, which is advantageous when food is scarce. Often dwarfed creatures are specialized and more efficient at processing nutrients. Small animals can also better utilize little shelters, to help them avoid predators and harsh environmental conditions.

Other island animals tend toward gigantism. Being big can mean fewer predators or less competition for resources. Mammals, for example, grew in size following the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Rates of change in mammals' sizes were described in a January article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Each species'?physiology limits?the extent to which it can grow or shrink. This chameleon may be the smallest possible vertebrate with complex eyes. But maybe not. The search for the smallest will undoubtedly continue, as the limit of miniaturization is as yet undefined.

Christopher J. Raxworthy, a herpetologist at the American Museum of Natural History, told The New York Times of a recent trip to Madagascar in search of chameleons, "And that?s one of the best things about being a scientist ? there is always the thrill of your next discovery."

The chameleon study was published on February 14 in the online journal PLoS ONE.

Syria Rebels Kill Prosecutor, Judge In Idlib

BEIRUT (AP) ? Gunmen opened fire Sunday on a car carrying a senior Syrian state prosecutor and a judge in the restive northwest province of Idlib, killing both of them and their driver, according to the state news agency.

Syrian military defectors waging an armed struggle against President Bashar Assad's regime control parts of Idlib province, which borders Turkey. It has been one of the regions hardest hit by the government crackdown on an 11-month-old uprising against Assad's regime.

State news agency SANA said Idlib provincial state prosecutor Nidal Ghazal and Judge Mohammed Ziadeh were killed instantly in the attack.

A day earlier, SANA said gunmen shot dead Jamal al-Bish, member of the city council of the nearby northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest. It said he was killed outside the city, a center of support for Assad that has been relatively quiet since the uprising began.

The Syrian government blames armed "terrorists" for the uprising and says they are carrying out a foreign conspiracy to destabilize the country.

Clashes between military rebels and Syrian forces are growing more frequent and the defectors have managed to take control of small pieces of territory in the north and in central Homs province. The increasing militarization of the conflict is pushing Syria to the brink of a civil war.

The U.N. last gave a death toll for the conflict in January, saying 5,400 had been killed in 2011 alone. But hundreds more have been killed since, according to activist groups. The group Local Coordination Committees says more than 7,300 have been killed since March of last year. There is no way to independently verify the numbers, however, as Syria bans almost all foreign journalists and human rights organizations.

In other violence, activists reported that security forces shelled rebel-held areas in the besieged city of Homs.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said forces continued to shell the Homs neighborhood of Baba Amr, which has been under government attack since Feb. 4. The Observatory, which has activists throughout Syria, said 23 buses full of troops along with military vehicles and ambulances were seen heading from Damascus toward Homs.

The group also said troops stormed the eastern town of Sukhna searching for fugitive members of the opposition, and that one woman was shot dead during the raids. It said two other people were killed by troops in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour and the northern village of Atareb.

Activist groups called a one-day strike in the capital Damascus to express support for other cities in revolt. But the call did not appear to have been widely heeded. Residents in the capital told The Associated Press that businesses were open as usual on the first day of the work week and so were schools and universities.

Calls for strikes in the past did not succeed in tightly controlled Damascus, where government forces and informers keep a close eye on all activities. The capital has been mostly quiet since the uprising began.

Earlier Sunday, a funeral was held in Damascus for a man who was killed a day earlier when Syrian security forces fired live rounds and tear gas at thousands of people marching in a funeral procession that turned into one of the largest protests in the capital.

The Local Coordination Committees said security forces pressured the parents of the victim, Samer al-Khatib, to bury him early so his funeral would not turn into an anti-government protest.

Meanwhile, Egypt's foreign ministry said it is withdrawing its ambassador to Syria. Many Arab countries have been scaling back diplomatic representation in Syria as Assad's regime rejects an Arab League plan to resolve the crisis that calls for the president to step aside and transfer power to his vice president.
