Atlanta Falcons finish regular season with romp over Tampa Bay Buccaneers; will play at New York Giants 1 p.m. Sunday in first round of NFL playoffs

ATLANTA -- Michael Turner and the Falcons didn?t want to settle for just making the playoffs.

They wanted momentum and the best seed possible.

Hoping for a fast start, the Falcons set a team record with 42 first-half points, including two touchdown runs by Turner, and Atlanta cruised to a 45-24 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday to clinch the No. 5 seed.

Julio Jones caught two touchdown passes in a span of 26 seconds in the first quarter as the Falcons gave the Buccaneers their 10th straight loss.

?We didn?t want to come down to the wire, backing into the playoffs,? Turner said.

The Falcons were motivated by two blowout losses -- 48-21 to Green Bay in last year?s playoffs and 45-16 at New Orleans last week.

?Getting embarrassed like that last year, that?s not who we were,? Turner said. ?We just wanted another chance.?

The Falcons (10-6) and Detroit (10-6) are the NFC wild cards. Atlanta, which beat Detroit on Oct. 23, won the tiebreaker with the Lions for the more favorable seeding. The Falcons will play at the New York Giants in the first round of the playoffs.

?We wanted to play our final regular-season game with a lot of intensity and energy, and I think we did that in all three phases,? Falcons coach Mike Smith said.

Josh Freeman threw two interceptions and lost a fumble in the first half as the Buccaneers (4-12) closed their season with their 10th straight loss, leaving the status of coach Raheem Morris in doubt.

?If I was in the business of working out my future, I wouldn?t be coaching,? Morris said. ?I?m going to go to work tomorrow until they tell me to stop.?

The Falcons led 42-0 when they began resting some starters, including quarterback Matt Ryan and Turner, late in the first half.

?We had opportunities the week before and just didn?t make the plays,? Ryan said. ?Today, we made the plays and I think that?s what we needed moving forward.?

Ryan was 6 of 9 for 106 yards, including touchdown passes of 17 and 48 yards to Jones in the first quarter.

Tampa Bay, which finished 10-6 last season and started 4-2 this season, is left with its longest losing streak in one season in 34 years. The Buccaneers also lost 10 straight in 1977. They lost 11 straight between the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

?This is not the season we wanted or expected, but we will need to rededicate ourselves and get ready for this offseason,? Morris said.

Turnovers were a problem for the Buccaneers all season. Freeman began the day tied for the league lead with 19 interceptions before completing 31 of 45 passes for 274 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

With Atlanta leading 42-0, Freeman threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Dezmon Briscoe with about 2 minutes remaining in the first half. Freeman threw a 5-yard TD pass to Briscoe in the fourth quarter.

Tampa Bay?s other touchdown came on Elbert Mack?s 40-yard interception return against Falcons? backup Chris Redman in the third quarter.

Turner ran for 172 yards and two touchdowns, including an 81-yard scoring run late in the first half. The score capped the Falcons? run of six unanswered touchdowns.

The Falcons led 21-0 after the first quarter and then put the game away with three more touchdowns in the second quarter.

The strong showing was important for the Falcons. Last week?s loss at New Orleans was the worst in four seasons with Smith.

?The main thing we wanted to do was flush out of our system last week,? tight end Tony Gonzalez said.

The Falcons announced before the game Gonzalez, 35, has signed a one-year contract extension, ending speculation he might retire after this season.

The Falcons had the No. 1 seed in the playoffs last year before losing to the Packers.

Despite the team?s lower seed, Gonzalez said the Falcons are prepared for a longer postseason run.

?Honestly, I?ve said it all year: I think we?re a better team than we were last year,? Gonzalez said.

Rookie Jacquizz Rodgers scored on a 1-yard run for his first career touchdown to start the Falcons? scoring. Rodgers lost a fumble at the Tampa Bay 2 in the fourth quarter.

After Ryan?s first TD pass to Jones, Dominique Franks? interception on Tampa Bay?s first down gave the ball back to Atlanta.

On first down from the Buccaneers 48, Ryan again threw to Jones, who fought off safety Tanard Jackson for the catch. Jones then jumped up from the turf, hit cornerback E.J. Biggers with a stiff-arm and then dragged Biggers into the end zone.

Turner had two touchdown runs and Curtis Lofton returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Matt Bryant kicked a 20-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter after the Buccaneers were stopped on fourth down at their 10.

Chile battles 3 huge forest fires; 1 killed

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) ? Firefighters in Chile battled three huge wildfires Monday that have burned about 90 square miles (23,000 hectares) of forest, destroyed more than 100 homes and have driven away thousands of tourists while causing millions of dollars in losses.

The fires also claimed their first victim: an elderly man who refused warnings to leave his home.

Chile's normally rainy southern regions are suffering from a nationwide heat wave, on top of a drought that makes fires increasingly likely. The country was battling 48 separate fires on Sunday alone, and red alerts were declared for the regions of Magallanes, Bio Bio and Maule.

"We have a situation of extreme vulnerability," said President Sebastian Pinera, who called for toughening sentences for arson.

In the Bio Bio region, the timber industry is threatened by a fire that destroyed an Arauco company mill. Shares in Arauco's parent company, Copec SA, dropped nearly 4 percent before recovering in Monday trading. One of the Bio Bio fires also killed a 75-year-old man who refused to evacuate. Hundreds of others who did leave their homes were forced to relocate yet again early Monday as the flames advanced.

In Magallanes, more than 7 percent of the famed Torres del Paine national park had burned, ruining vacations for some of the 150,000 tourists who come each year, mostly during the brief southern summer. Strong winds grounded helicopters and planes for long periods, leaving the fight to more than 750 firefighters on the ground, who have contained four of six areas where the fire spread. Authorities hoped to reopen the northern section of the park to tourists later in the week.

An Israeli tourist, Rotem Singer, 23, has denied a charge of negligently starting the Torres del Paine fire, but prosecutor Ivan Vidal said Singer's traveling companions said he set fire to toilet paper after going to the bathroom, and then failed to put it out completely. If convicted, he faces up to two months in jail.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Revelers erupted in cheers amid a confetti-filled celebration in New York's Times Square to welcome in the new year, part of star-studded celebrations and glittering fireworks displays around the world to usher in 2012.

From New Zealand to New York, the world eagerly welcomed a new year Sunday and hoped for a better future, saying goodbye to a year of hurricanes, tsunamis and economic turmoil that many would rather forget.

In New York, hundreds of thousands gathered at the crossroads of the world to witness a crystal ball with more than 30,000 lights descended at midnight. Lady Gaga and Mayor Michael Bloomberg led the crowd in the final-minute countdown of the famed crystal-paneled ball drop.

Revelers in Australia, Asia, Europe and the South Pacific island nation of Samoa, which jumped across the international dateline to be first to celebrate, welcomed 2012 with booming pyrotechnic displays. Fireworks soared and sparked over Moscow's Red Square, crowds on Paris' Champs-Elysees boulevard popped Champagne corks at midnight.

But many approached the new year with more relief than joy, as people battered by weather disasters, joblessness and economic uncertainty hoped the stroke of midnight would change their fortunes.

"It was a pretty tough year, but God was looking after us and I know 2012 has got to be better," said Kyralee Scott, 16, of New Jersey, whose father spent most of the year out of work.

Some New York revelers, wearing party hats and "2012" glasses, began camping out Saturday morning, even as workers readied bags stuffed with hundreds of balloons and technicians put colored filters on klieg lights. The crowds cheered as workers lit the crystal-paneled ball that dropped at midnight Saturday 400 feet (120 meters) above the street. The sphere, now decorated with 3,000 Waterford crystal triangles, has been dropping to mark the new year since 1907, long before television made it a U.S. tradition.

The first worldwide celebrations started in the island nation of Samoa, which hopped across the international date line at midnight on Thursday, skipping Friday and moving instantly to Saturday.

Samoa and the neighboring nation of Tokelau lie near the dateline that zigzags vertically through the Pacific Ocean; both sets of islands decided to realign themselves this year from the Americas side of the line to the Asia side to be more in tune with key trading partners.

In Sydney, more than 1.5 million people watched the shimmering pyrotechnic display designed around the theme "Time to Dream." In London, some 250,000 people gathered to listen to Big Ben chime at the stroke of midnight.

World leaders evoked 2011's struggles in their New Year's messages with some ambivalence.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned Europe's crisis is not finished and "that 2012 will be the year full of risks, but also of possibilities."

Pope Benedict XVI marked the end of 2011 with prayers of thanks and said humanity awaits the new year with apprehension but also with hope for a better future.

"We prepare to cross the threshold of 2012, remembering that the Lord watches over us and takes care of us," Benedict said. "In him this evening we want to entrust the entire world. We put into his hands the tragedies of this world of ours, and we also offer him the hopes for a better future."

In Brazil, heavy rains didn't halt parties as upward of 2 million people gathered on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro and nearly as many on a main avenue in Sao Paulo, South America's biggest city. Massive fireworks displays and top music acts graced stages across the nation.

Brazil has seen healthy economic growth in recent years, as the country prepares to host the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016. Growth, however, has stalled in recent months, and Brazilian leaders are trying to stimulate the economy in the new year.

"This was a good year for Brazil and I think things are only getting better, it feels like we're making big advances," said Fabiana dos Santos Silva, an 18-year-old student who gathered with hundreds of thousands of others on a main avenue in Sao Paulo.

In Times Square, hundreds of thousands of people were crammed into spectator pens ringed by barricades, enjoying surprisingly warm weather for the Northeast this time of year. The National Weather Service said Saturday it was about 49 degrees Fahrenheit in nearby Central Park. That's about 10 degrees warmer than the normal high temperature this time of year.

Many expressed cautious hope that better times were ahead after a year in which Japan was ravaged by an earthquake and tsunami, hurricanes wreaked havoc across the country and a debt crisis devastated Europe's economy.

"Everybody's suffering. That's why it's so beautiful to be here celebrating something with everybody," said Lisa Nicol, 47, of Melbourne, Australia.

For all of the holiday's bittersweet potential, New York City always treats it like a big party ? albeit one that now takes place under the watchful eye of a massive security force, including more than 1,500 police officers.

In Las Vegas, police shut down a 4-mile (6.4-kilometer) section of the Strip to vehicle traffic six hours before midnight, letting revelers party in the street. Casino nightclubs touted pricey, exclusive bashes hosted by celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Fergie, and fireworks were expected to shoot from the rooftops of eight of the city's most famous casinos.

Atlanta welcomed thousands to its downtown, where a giant peach is dropped every New Year's Eve at midnight. Fireworks were to be launched from the top of the Space Needle in Seattle; in Houston, tens of thousands were celebrating at a party with country singer Delbert McClinton.

In summer temperatures at Key West, Florida, three separate midnight drops were planned. A giant facsimile of a conch shell was lowered at Sloppy Joe's Bar, Ernest Hemingway's favorite watering hole when he lived in Key West. At the Schooner Wharf Bar, the bar owner dressed as a pirate wench was to drop down from a mast of a tall sailing ship. And at the Bourbon Street Pub complex, a drag queen named Sushi was to descend in a glittering 6-foot (1.83-meter) red women's high heel.

In San Francisco, revelers were lining the waterfront for the annual fireworks show. Though the city's fickle weather and persistent fog can never be counted on to cooperate, forecasters say the skies above the city should be clear overnight.

Several people preparing to celebrate the holiday in the U.S. told the AP that they would usher in the New Year hoping the Congress would become a more cooperative place. Some talked about their hopes for the presidential election. Others said they hoped to hold on to their job, or find a new one to replace one they'd lost.

An Associated Press-GfK poll conducted Dec. 8-12 found that 62 percent of Americans are optimistic that the nation's fortunes will improve in 2012, and 78 percent hopeful that their own family will have a better year. Most wrote off 2011 as a dud.

UFC 141 weigh-in: Diaz weight only minor issue, Overeem absolutely massive at 263

There was no hat tossing, no pushing or shoving, in fact Donald Cerrone tried to give a gift of sorts to Nate Diaz.

Diaz missed the lightweight limit at 155 pounds and then cut to within one-quarter pound of the allowable 156-pound limit.

Instead of taking 20 percent of Diaz's purse, as is normally mandated by state commissions, Cerrone agreed to re-work the contract. He also said Diaz didn't have to cut anymore weight.

That's when Cerrone's camp told its fighter to pipe down and asked Diaz to go lose the weight. Diaz did so without any resistance and the most heated fight at UFC 141 is a go.

Many people were in attendance to see massive heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem weigh in. Overeem came in at a career-high 263 pounds. Lesnar, who lost a significant amount of weight during his bouts with diverticulitis, came in at 266. The big man is back.

There were some prefight rumors that the UFC wouldn't have Cerrone and Diaz square off today.

Yesterday's staredown at the final press conference resulted in a near brawl when Diaz flipped Cerrone's cowboy hat from his head. The staredown happened today, but it was brief and UFC president Dana White was between the fighters, who were at a distance.

Non tutti gli utenti Android hanno accolto con entusiasmo questo nuovo smartphone, sempre colpa del display, per il quale sarebbe stato pi? difficile utilizzare lo smartphone con una sola mano oppure portarlo nella tasca dei pantaloni. Nonostante ci? sembra che il Galaxy Note, con il suo enorme display e con la sua S-Pen abbia avuto successo.

Infatti anche stavolta Samsung ha realizzato un dispositivo di successo, che dal mese di Ottobre ad oggi ha registrato 1 milioni di spedizioni globali, come comunica SamsungTomorrow in questo comunicato stampa:

A Samsung official also said ?1 million global shipping of Galaxy Note means it has well positioned itself as a market creator,? also adding ?Samsung will continuously strengthen its leadership in the global smartphone market as well as create new markets with innovative devices.?

Insomma, grandi numeri e grande successo, ancora una volta, per Samsung che in media, dal mese di Ottobre, avrebbe venduto pi? di 300.000 Galaxy Note?al mese, nei mercati Europei ed Asiatici, che si confermano i migliori del momento. Non resta che attendere il suo arrivo nel mercato statunitense per vedere quanto questo numero sia destinato a crescere.
