Choosing The Right Venture Capital Firm For Your Startup Business ...

Choosing The Right Venture Capital Firm For Your Startup Business

Not all venture capital firms offer startup capital for your business. There are venture capital firms that are focused on a specific kind of capital, so it is pertinent to research about the capital venture firms that would cater to your needs before you even think of approaching one.

Venture capital firms have specific requirements when an entrepreneur applies for their startup capital services. A great way of increasing the possibility of your business plan getting funded by a VCs is knowing their requirements and evaluating if you would fit into what they are looking for. You could narrow down your VC choices to a specific group that would display high probability of accepting your business plan.

Some venture capital firms would only fund those companies or business within the proximity of their headquarters. If your target venture capital firm has geographical limitations, then you could look for VCs that does not have any particularity on location or you could look for a credible VC within your area.

Aside from the location or proximity requirements, look for venture capital firms that have experience in your field. For example, if they already have an existing and former portfolio company which is in the same field as your future business. You could look in the company?s records if the VC were able to help the business. This would give you confidence that the VC would be able to help you with your business.

But how would you know if the venture capital firms in your area are credible? Ask around. You will be surprised that people in the community, like lawyers and accountants, would know something about the venture capital firms. They can give you information about the personality and experience of the venture capitalists.

Aside from asking around, there are also published materials where you could check their portfolio companies. You could check the company websites or talk directly with the portfolio companies of the VCs. If a VC firm?s portfolio shows that they have considerably great success with businesses that have the same nature as yours, then there could be a probability that they will be investing in your business proposal.

When conducting a face to face meeting with the portfolio company?s CEO or officer, make sure that you would be asking how the venture capital firms would conduct their relationship with them. VC firms would often be a group of investors or affiliates of an insurance company or a bank. You can also ask about the partners of these VC firms.

Do not be inhibited when asking about the reputation of a venture capital firm. Let?s put it this way, if you apply for them, they would surely ask about you and your background. It would be fair enough to learn if they are doing their business well before you go ahead with a business relationship with them. When looking for a venture capital firm make sure that you would working with a firm that maintains a good communication and profitable relationship with their portfolio companies.

Another thing that you could consider would be the assets of the venture capital firm. Even if you are just thinking about applying for a startup capital in the venture capital firm, do not deduct the possibility that you could get an expansion capital or a second stage funding from them.

In a way, it would be beneficial for you since you will be getting somebody experienced following the development of your business.

South Florida helping state's economic recovery, economist says

Florida's economy has gained momentum in the past year, with Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties helping the state on its slow trek to recovering from the devastating Great Recession, according to an analysis released Friday by the Wells Fargo Economic Group.

"All indications point to stronger gains this year," Wells Fargo senior economist Mark Vitner said, with more companies "expanding their operations or relocating facilities to the state."

Hiring has especially picked up in the Miami-Dade area, Vitner said during Friday's Wells Fargo Economic Conference Call. "We're seeing more people join the job force," he said.

Broward and Palm Beach counties also are adding jobs, although not at as high a rate as Miami-Dade, Vitner said. "Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach have seen much more modest improvement," the economist said.

Broward added 2,100 manufacturing jobs in the last year ? more than any other Florida metro area, according to state statistics. Broward's unemployment rate fell to 7.2 percent in April, while Palm Beach County's dropped to 8.5 percent

But even with the recent economic good news, the state and South Florida haven't completely recovered from economic bad times ? that will take a couple of years more, Vitner added.

It may take even longer, said Jorge Salazar-Carrillo, an economics professor who directs the Center of Economic Research at Florida International University.

"I see a slower pace of growth than what Wells Fargo is expecting," he said. "I think we are inching forward."

April's jobs report may have painted too upbeat a picture as it didn't take into account that South Florida's tourist season was ending and probably more workers have since lost seasonal jobs, Salazar-Carrillo said.

The entire state's economic recovery has been slower "than what we would like," added Sean Snaith, director of the University of Central Florida's Institute for Economic Competitiveness.

"The state is more tortoise than hare right now. Still, we know how the story ends ? the tortoise wins the race," Snaith said.

Palm Beach County is one of the hot spots to what Vitner called an expanding "life science industry" that is still in its infancy. Florida has become a leader in the new industry ? to the point some biomedical companies are leaving California and other states to settle in the Sunshine State, he added.

"They're very attracted to going to something new ? a building that doesn't need to be retrofitted," Vitner said. "I think it is easier. And the cost of living is cheaper here. It's a real winner for the state."

He noted that Palm Beach County is home to the Scripps Research Institute and the Max Planck Florida Institute.

Other good signs: Florida is exporting more goods ? South Florida is helping lead that trend ? while the Sunshine State is second only to Texas in attracting new residents, Vitner said, quoting U.S. Census Bureau statistics. Most of Florida's new residents are younger people coming here to work, he noted.

Retirees are also buying homes, Vitner said.

"Florida is a bargain again," he said, with some retirees buying homes in Florida and not worrying about selling their current houses, "because homes are so cheap here. They figure they can sell their [current] home later."

Heat resting up before return to East finals

MIAMI (AP) ? Dwyane Wade has been battling knee soreness. LeBron James was hobbling after a falling into a courtside cameraman. Chris Bosh remains sidelined indefinitely with an abdominal strain. Mike Miller looks to be in agony whenever he moves.

An extra day of rest doesn't sound like much, but it means plenty right now to the Miami Heat.

Now halfway to their goal of an NBA championship, the Heat took a welcomed ? and needed ? day off Friday after closing out their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup with the Indiana Pacers.

The East finals open Monday in Miami against either Philadelphia or Boston, teams that will settle their second-round series with a Game 7 on Saturday night.

"We can use it," James said after the Heat ousted the Pacers with a Game 6 win in Indianapolis on Thursday. "Any team in the postseason, any extra day that you can get, it definitely helps us. So we're going to take advantage of it."

It's not like the Heat were planning to sit at home all day, since most players at this time of year tend to hit the training room on off days. Still, for the first time in a while, Friday provided a chance for the reigning East champs to relax a bit, especially after three hard-fought wins in five days allowed Miami to claw back from what was a soon-forgotten 2-1 series deficit to the Pacers.

Wade and James combined to score 197 points in the final three games of the Indiana series, while the Pacers' starters collectively managed 184. Other Heat players stepped up along the way ? Udonis Haslem with 14 points in Game 4, Shane Battier with 13 in Game 5, Miller with 12 in Game 6 ? but with Bosh sidelined, it was Wade and James who welcomed the challenge of having to handle much of the offensive responsibility.

"I don't know if they've been required to shoulder as much responsibility as they've had to now, particularly now that Chris is out," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "And we're making no excuses. We have enough. But they have to give us more and that's what competition will do. You play against good competition in this league and it brings out the best in you ? you hope."

Bosh told ESPN.com this week that he is improving, but stopped short of offering a date for his possible return.

He was hurt midway through Game 1 of the Indiana series, meaning nearly two full weeks have passed since he was diagnosed with a strained lower abdominal muscle. The best-case scenario for recovery for someone with that type of injury is typically 2-3 weeks, though the Heat have never deviated from saying Bosh is out indefinitely.

"I appreciate extra rest," Wade said. "I'm never going to cross my eye on that at all. I feel like it's well-deserved. I think also it gives us an opportunity to get Chris more therapy, more treatment the days that we're off and he moves that much closer to being able to rejoin this ballclub. I thought this was a very physical series ... so the rest will do us some (good)."

The Pacers probably would suggest Wade couldn't get much better than he was in the last 10 quarters of their series.

Wade was awful ? 2 for 13 shooting, five points, five turnovers ? in Game 3, an Indiana blowout that many thought put the Pacers in control of the series. He started Game 4 by missing seven of his first eight shots. And from there, the 2006 finals MVP was in 2006 finals MVP form again: Wade shot 39 for 57 the rest of the series, putting up 41 points and 10 rebounds in Thursday's clincher.

Since 1992, according to STATS LLC, there's been 52 instances of someone having at least 40 points and 10 rebounds in a playoff game. Of those, 50 came from players listed to be at least 6-foot-6. The other two are by Wade, perhaps generously listed at 6-foot-4.

"Spectacular, from the beginning to the end," James said of Wade's Game 6 effort. "He got in a rhythm early and just kept going."

James missed a layup with 1:34 left in the first half on Thursday, his left leg crashing into a television cameraman sitting just beyond the baseline. He was shaken up and briefly tended to on the Heat bench, but played all but 28 seconds of the second half and insisted he was fine afterward. And Miller ? who has dealt with several injuries in his two Miami seasons ? makes running jokes about his health, not even acknowledging things hurt even though he's taken to sitting on the floor during games of late to help stretch his back.

Miller had 10 points in the first five games of the series. His 12 on Thursday came on four 3-pointers, his specialty.

"It's all about opportunity," Miller said. "That's what this team has right now, opportunity."

The way they all see it, the job is only half done. Miami has eight postseason wins. It takes 16 to win an NBA title. So even though some aches and pains are there, it doesn't change the goal.

"It's a no-excuse season," Spoelstra said, a familiar refrain for him in recent weeks. "And this is a no-excuse team."

Forensics ferret out fire beetle secret

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Criminal cases can often only be solved using forensics to piece together physical evidence and reconstruct what happened. Prof. Dr. Helmut Schmitz from the Institute of Zoology at the University of Bonn and Dr. Herbert Bousack from the Peter Gr?nberg Institut at the Forschungzentrum J?lich went through the same experience. Prof. Schmitz has been researching fire beetles of the genus Melanophila and their sophisticated IR sensors, which these pyrophilous insects use to detect forest fires, for many years. This is a very special ecological niche. "It allows the beetle larvae to freely eat their way through the wood because the trees, which have been killed by great heat, can no longer fight back, and there are hardly any predators that would eat them in freshly burned forests," the Bonn zoologist reported.

A tiny sphere senses changes in pressure due to heat

Meanwhile, with the help of the Forschungszentrum caesar in Bonn and the Technische Universit?t Dresden, the researchers have unraveled the functional principle of this so-called photo-mechanical beetle infrared sensor, and they have started to work on a technical reconstruction of this natural prototype. Tiny cuticula spheres of the beetles' IR receptors ? at 0.02 mm, smaller than the diameter of a fine hair ? are filled with water and absorb IR radiation very well. Due to the fact that they heat up, the water in particular expands suddenly, and the resulting change in pressure is immediately detected by highly sensitive mechano-sensitive sensory cells. "However, an important question had remained unanswered ? how sensitive is the sensor?" asked Prof. Schmitz. This question could be best answered by equipping Melanophila beetles with mini transmitters on their search for forest fires. "Then we would be able to log the distance flown to the burnt area and, based on this distance, calculate the minimum required heat radiation the beetles are attracted by," explained the zoologist. But at a length of about 1 cm, the beetles are too small to carry a transmitter for long distances.

In 1925, a blaze destroyed a large oil storage facility in California

The resourceful scientists turned to a past event, which proved helpful. In August 1925, a large oil depot in Coalinga, California, went up in flames. "Reports from that era mentioned that the huge blaze attracted masses of charcoal beetles (Melanophila consputa)," explained Prof. Schmitz. Since the fire location was in the forest-less Central Valley of California, the beetles must have flown in from a great distance. Most likely, they came from large forests on the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada about 130 kilometers away, where there had been large forest fires in the two preceding years. "On such burnt areas, beetles multiply en masse, and after they emerged, they went to look for forest fires in the subsequent summers," said Prof. Schmitz. A forested area about 28 kilo?meters from the burning oil tanks in the San Benito Mountain Natural Area north of Coalinga seems rather unlikely as the source of the beetles since forest fires had not been reported in this area prior to 1925.

Based on a model from fire protection technology

Dr. Herbert Bousack, an engineer from the Peter Gr?nberg Institut at the Forschungszentrum J?lich performed the calculations for modeling the sensitivity of the sensor. "The Coalinga fire is a good match for this simulation," Dr. Bousack reported. First however, many parameters had to be researched painstakingly, such as the size of the fire, or the weather conditions. "More than 85 years after the event, such data was hard to obtain." The engineer based his mathematical simulation on various fire models such as are used in assessing of fire risks for storage tank facilities. "We adapted these technical guidelines for our purposes, which allowed us to fall back on proven experiences," said the engineer.

According to the math, the beetle sensor is incredibly sensitive

The result was amazing. "According to our calculations, the infrared sensors of Melanophila beetles should be able to sense signals even if they are below the level of thermal noise," reported Dr. Bousack. Obviously, the beetles rely on stochastic resonance. "This method enables them to detect weak periodic signals that are normally superimposed by the noise," explained the engineer. According to the results of the calculations, the sensors can detect the tiniest amounts of heat - roughly comparable to the energy resolution of radio telescopes. "Our simulations and calculations make it seem quite probable that the IF sensors of pyrophilous Melanophila beetles are more sensitive than uncooled infra?red sensors currently available in the market," Prof. Schmitz summarized the outcome. "Additional efforts to implement this natural prototype technologically will be required." So, they might be able to revolutionize early-warning systems for forest fires.
