Jack Klugman Dead: 'The Odd Couple' Actor Dies At 90

Jack Klugman, star of the much-beloved sitcom 'The Odd Couple', has died, his attorney told KTRK.

He was 90.

Klugman's son Adam confirmed the report to the AP.

According to his attorney, he died peacefully at his home in California. He is survived by his wife Peggy, two sons and two grandchildren.

Klugman is best known for his starring role in 'The Odd Couple.' He played Oscar Madison, the sloppy roommate to Felix Unger, played by Tony Randall. He also starred in the Academy Award-nominated "Twelve Angry Men."

Here's more from the AP:

LOS ANGELES ? Jack Klugman, the prolific, craggy-faced character actor and regular guy who was loved by millions as the messy one in TV's "The Odd Couple" and the crime-fighting coroner in "Quincy, M.E.," died Monday, a son said. He was 90.

Klugman, who lost his voice to throat cancer in the 1980s and trained himself to speak again, died with his wife at his side.

"He had a great life and he enjoyed every moment of it and he would encourage others to do the same," son Adam Klugman said.

Adam Klugman said he was spending Christmas with his brother, David, and their families. Their father had been convalescing for some time but had apparently died suddenly and they were not sure of the exact cause.

"His sons loved him very much," David Klugman said. "We'll carry on in his spirit."

Never anyone's idea of a matinee idol, Klugman remained a popular star for decades simply by playing the type of man you could imagine running into at a bar or riding on a subway with ? gruff, but down to earth, his tie stained and a little loose, a racing form under his arm, a cigar in hand during the days when smoking was permitted.

He brought a city actor ideal for "The Odd Couple," which ran from 1970 to 1975 and was based on Neil Simon's play about mismatched roommates, divorced New Yorkers who end up living together. The show teamed Klugman ? the sloppy sports writer Oscar Madison ? and Tony Randall ? the fussy photographer Felix Unger ? in the roles played by Walter Matthau and Art Carney on Broadway and Matthau and Jack Lemmon in the 1968 film. Klugman had already had a taste of the show when he replaced Matthau on Broadway and he learned to roll with the quick-thinking Randall, with whom he had worked in 1955 on the CBS series "Appointment with Adventure."

"There's nobody better to improvise with than Tony," Klugman said. "A script might say, `Oscar teaches Felix football.' There would be four blank pages. He would provoke me into reacting to what he did. Mine was the easy part."

They were battlers on screen, and the best of friends in real life. When Randall died in 2004 at age 84, Klugman told CNN: "A world without Tony Randall is a world that I cannot recognize."

In "Quincy, M.E.," which ran from 1976 to 1983, Klugman played an idealistic, tough-minded medical examiner who tussled with his boss by uncovering evidence of murder in cases where others saw natural causes.

"We had some wonderful writers," he said in a 1987 Associated Press interview. "Quincy was a muckraker, like Upton Sinclair, who wrote about injustices. He was my ideal as a youngster, my author, my hero.

"Everybody said, `Quincy'll never be a hit.' I said, `You guys are wrong. He's two heroes in one, a cop and a doctor.' A coroner has power. He can tell the police commissioner to investigate a murder. I saw the opportunity to do what I'd gotten into the theater to do ? give a message.

"They were going to do cops and robbers with `Quincy.' I said, `You promised me I could do causes.' They said, `Nobody wants to see that.' I said, `Look at the success of "60 Minutes." They want to see it if you present it as entertainment.'"

For his 1987 role as 81-year-old Nat in the Broadway production of "I'm Not Rappaport," Klugman wore leg weights to learn to shuffle like an elderly man. He said he would wear them for an hour before each performance, "to remember to keep that shuffle."

"The guy is so vital emotionally, but physically he can't be," Klugman said.

"We treat old people so badly. There is nothing easy about 80."

The son of Russian Jewish immigrants, he was born in Philadelphia and began his acting career in college drama (Carnegie Institute of Technology). After serving in the Army during World War II, he went on to summer stock and off-Broadway, rooming with fellow actor Charles Bronson as both looked for paying jobs.

He made his Broadway debut in 1952 in a revival of "Golden Boy." His film credits included Sidney Lumet's "12 Angry Men" and Blake Edwards' "Days of Wine and Roses" and an early television highlight was appearing with Humphrey Bogart and Henry Fonda in a production of "The Petrified Forest."

His performance in the classic 1959 musical "Gypsy" brought him a Tony nomination for best featured (supporting) actor in a musical.

He also appeared in several episodes of "The Twilight Zone," including a memorable 1963 one in which he played a negligent father whose son is seriously wounded in Vietnam. His other TV shows included "The Defenders" and the soap opera "The Greatest Gift."

In a 1987 interview in the New York Daily News, he said, "once I did three hourlong shows in 2 1/2 weeks. Think we'd do that now? Huh! But then it was great. I did summer stock, played the classics. Me!"

Throat cancer took away his raspy voice for several years in the 1980s. When he was back on the stage for a 1993 revival of "Three Men on a Horse," The Associated Press review said, "His voice may be a little scratchy but his timing is as impeccable as ever."

"The only really stupid thing I ever did in my life was to start smoking," he said in 1996. Seeing people smoking in television and films, he added, "disgusts me, it makes me so angry ? kids are watching."

In his later years, he guest-starred on TV series including "Third Watch" and "Crossing Jordan" and appeared in a 2010 theatrical film, "Camera Obscura."

Klugman's hobby was horse racing and he eventually took up raising them, too.

A horse Klugman co-owned, Jacklin Klugman, finished third in 1980's Kentucy Derby and fourth in that year's Preakness Stakes.

"I always loved to gamble," he said. "I never got close to a horse. Fate dealt me a terrible blow when it gave me a good horse the first time out. I thought how easy this is.

"Now I love being around them."

Klugman's wife, actress-comedian Brett Somers, played his ex-wife, Blanche, in the "Odd Couple" series. The couple, who married in 1953 and had two sons, Adam and David, had been estranged for years at the time of her death in 2007.

In February 2008, at age 85, Klugman married longtime girlfriend Peggy Crosby. His attorney Larry Larson wrote in an email that Klugman is also survived by two grandchildren and that memorial services have not been set.

In 1997, Klugman was sued by an ex-girlfriend, Barbara Neugass, who claimed he had promised to support her for the rest of her life. But a jury rejected her claim.

Something's Gotta Give! - MOMeo Magazine

Posted by Carla Young on December 17, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Stop trying to do it ALL!

Calling it trying to be a SuperMom wouldn?t do justice to all the things we try to do (or feel guilty that we aren?t doing). It?s no wonder we resort to the most ineffective time management tactic of all: multitasking. We take on so much, even if it?s just mentally, that we literally have no hope of achieving everything.

We want to bake homemade cookies, volunteer weekly at the school, chair the organizing committee for your local community group, shuffle kids to lessons, find time for our own health and fitness, make awe-inspiring dishes worthy of Pinterest and grow a sustainable business.

And yes, the list goes on (and on and on and on).

Something has GOT to give. This may be the first time you are hearing this because I know those guru types like to tell you that you can have it all, but it?s not true. You probably sensed what I am about to tell you: You do have to make sacrifices to grow a business.

How to Pick and Choose What You Give Up to Grow

Make a List of Non-Negotiables ? Get to the core of what you value by making a comprehensive list of things you absolutely positively will not sacrifice. Be honest. If walking your Kindergartner to school every morning before going to Yoga class is important, put it on the list and design around those activities.

Get to the Essence of It ? Ask yourself why you do the things you do (or at least, why you add them to your guilt list and agonize over not doing them). What is it that you truly value about the activity? What do you get out of it in terms of personal growth, fulfillment, pride?

Find Substitutions for Activities ? Now that you know why you choose to do what you do, next determine if there is another (simpler) way to achieve the same goal. For example, can you enlist other members of the family in the preparation of homemade meals? Can you contribute to the community in a less time-intensive role?

Involve Your Family in the Process ? Enlist your family?s help in vetting your list. Ask them to share what is important to them. The answer may surprise you. For example, the extra duties you take on at school may not be as important to your children as you participating in the occasion in-classroom activity or field trip.

Do the Reality Check ? Tally up what you are left with on your list and what you need to grow your business. If the numbers don?t add up, go back to the beginning and re-examine your answers to the above questions because if you don?t, the something that is going to give will be you!

S.Africa's rand gains, market eyes current account data

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's rand edged up against the dollar on Wednesday after encouraging euro zone economic data, but local current account figures on Thursday may set the longer-term direction, and a wider than expected deficit could weigh on the rand.

The rand was at 8.7850 to the dollar at 1538 GMT, up 0.2 percent from Tuesday's New York close.

The local unit rose to a session high of 8.7620 earlier in the day after purchasing managers data from the euro zone improved in November, indicating a less severe slump in the region, which is South Africa's second-biggest trading partner.

South Africa's current account data for the third quarter will be released on Thursday at 0800 GMT.

Analysts surveyed by Reuters forecast a deficit of 6.55 percent, wider than the 6.4 percent gap in the second quarter.

Last week, data showing that South Africa's trade deficit had widened more than expected weighed on the rand and the current account figures will be keenly watched.

"Risk is probably tilted towards a disappointing reading," said Sean McCalgan, a market analyst at ETM. "If anything, the data is unlikely to impress. From what we've seen on the recent trade data that's probably going to be confirmed in the current account data as well. That could generate a bit of reversal if it does disappoint."

Government bonds firmed, with the yield on the 2026 bond 9 basis points lower at 7.51 percent and that on the 2015 paper falling one basis point to 5.51 percent.

South Africa's Treasury said it would auction 2.1 billion rand worth of its 2031 and 2048 government bonds on Tuesday.

Egypt president's supporters clash with opposition

Violence breaks out in Cairo, Egypt, outside Mohammed Morsi's presidential palace. NBC's Jim Maceda has more on the clashes and a possible constitutional compromise by the Egyptian government.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 4:25 p.m. ET -- Opposition protesters fought presidential supporters outside the Egyptian presidential palace on Wednesday, while inside the building the president's deputy proposed a way to end a crisis over a draft constitution that has split the most populous Arab nation.

Stones and petrol bombs flew between opposition protesters and supporters of President Mohammed Morsi, and the Interior Ministry said 32 people had been arrested and three police vehicles destroyed.

The Egyptian ministry of health told NBC News 60 people have been wounded in the clashes, but said there have been no fatalities.

The president's backers tore down tents erected by opponents of Morsi who began a sit-in protest on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

The demonstrators are angry over the president's expanded powers and his decision to rush through a new constitution they say does not represent the whole nation.

Tweets from activists on the scene said some anti-Morsi protesters were overwhelmed by the president's backers, who beat some of the protesters with clubs. Rocks were thrown, and some protesters were left bleeding.

Riot police were deployed between the two sides to try to stop confrontations that flared after dark despite an attempt by Vice President Mahmoud Mekky to ease the crisis.

Mekky said amendments to disputed articles in the draft constitution could be agreed on with the opposition. A written agreement could then be submitted to the next parliament, to be elected after a referendum on the constitution on Dec. 15.

"There must be consensus," he told a news conference, saying opposition demands had to be respected to reach a solution.

Ready for dialogue
In a news conference Wednesday, opposition coordinator Mohamed ElBaradei said: "We hold President Morsi and his government completely responsible for the violence happening in Egypt today."

"We are ready for dialogue if the constitutional decree is canceled ... and the referendum on this constitution is postponed," he said of the document written by an Islamist-led assembly that the opposition says ignores its concerns.

Opposition leaders have previously urged Morsi to retract the Nov. 22 decree, defer the referendum and agree to revise the constitution, but have not echoed calls from street protesters for his overthrow and the "downfall of the regime."

Morsi has said his decree was needed to prevent courts still full of judges appointed by ousted leader Hosni Mubarak from derailing a constitution vital for Egypt's political transition.

Protests spread to other cities, and offices of the Muslim Brotherhood's political party in Ismailia and Suez were torched.

Morsi flees Egypt's presidential palace as 'last warning' protesters battle cops

Egyptian supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood attack an Egyptian opposition protester in front of the presidential palace one day after a protest against President Mohammed Morsi, in Cairo, Egypt, on Dec. 5.

On Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Egypt's unrest showed the urgent need for dialogue between Morsi's government and opposition figures.

Supporters of Islamist president push Egypt to tipping point

Speaking at NATO, Clinton said the U.S. wanted to see a constitution emerge that protects the rights of all Egyptians ? men and women, and Christian and Muslim.

But asked to specifically address any shortcoming in the Islamist-supported draft constitution, Clinton didn't name any.

Rights groups as well as secular opponents of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood have criticized the draft. They say it rolls back the rights of women, religious minorities and others.

Liberals, Christians left out as Islamists back Egypt's draft constitution

Clinton said Wednesday the dialogue needed to be two-way ? not the government imposing its view.

She also called for Egypt's courts to be allowed to function.

On Tuesday, Egyptian police battled thousands of protesters outside the palace, prompting Morsi to leave the building, presidency sources said.

The Associated Press reported that some people broke through barbed wire around the building and hurled chairs and rocks at retreating police on Tuesday night.

The crowds had gathered in what organizers had dubbed "last warning" protests against Morsi, who infuriated opponents with a November 22 decree that expanded his powers. "The people want the downfall of the regime," the demonstrators chanted.

NBC's Jim Maceda and Charlene Gubash, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Successful Sales Management: The Right Sales Model For Your ...

In the old days it was simple.?

A manufacturer would build a factory, make products and send people out into the world to offer them for sale. That's how the concept we today know as sales began. In the original sales model, ?the representative would knock on a door, introduce the product, reveal the price, and ask for an order.?

On the one hand we see industries destroyed by new entrants using technology, and changing the cost dynamic.??Amazon might be?the best example. It changed the market for books and drove Borders out of business.?

Another is how consumer insurance has changed. A decade ago, virtually all consumer insurance was sold by High Street brokers. Now its sold on-line. In house sales, real estate agents still have offices in prime locations, but it's their on -line presence which brings in most customers.?

In books and magazine, in insurance, and in house sales, the traditional sales role has all but disappeared.

On the other hand we see manufacturers offering custom versions of standard products, selling them using the expertise of people.

Automobiles is a good example. Does anybody buy an off the shelf Mercedes any more???I doubt it.??Choosing from the models available, preferring a particular colour, adding those extra features to make this one individual and special. That's all part of the customer experience.? It can be done on-line, but is so much more fun when a sales associate facilitates the decisions. In luxury cars, the individual sales role is fundamental to the value proposition.

Those are extreme examples of course.?

Most businesses aren't that clear cut. But nor were books and wheels, until somebody decided to challenge the old order of things with an engaging new proposition to customers.??Henry Ford would have been overjoyed at the prospect of selling on-line, when you could have any colour you wanted, as long as it was black. Meanwhile book sellers, including Amazon, struggle to personalise the buying experience.

In each of these examples, somebody made the decision. They chose a customer demographic, decided on a value proposition, and constructed a sales model to suit.?

That's where most businesses find themselves stuck. Is the business model maximum volume, minimal value add, and low prices? Or is it about customer experience, with high prices and margins, but at low volume.?

Which is your choice? Somewhere in between, no doubt.

Both models are valid in most markets. Either will work, more or less, depending on execution. But ultimately the choice has to be focused on clear blue water. That's the only way to stand out from the crowd. Customers have to understand the unique proposition, and the trade off between price and personal service.

If your choice is the volume option, forget about a direct sales force. The Internet does a much better job, at lower cost.

You need a sales force capable of fitting in with what the customer wants. You need a management structure capable of turning itself inside out for one customer. You need marketing to explain what customers will get, provided they pay the price.

Probably you'll be somewhere between the two - most businesses are.?

You'll need an on-line presence, maybe with order processing options, or not, depending on other decisions. Your web site makes a big contribution, regardless of whether you choose to sell from it. ?

It helps customers find you, understand something about your proposition, and find the particular information they want. ?That's why the site should offer as much as possible, in terms of product and service options, features and what they mean, and corroboration from testimonials, case studies, configuration tables.?

Anything which draws the customer into a conversation is valuable - even if its just the prospect interacting with web pages. These days a web site isn't a nice to have - it's fundamental to your sales model, the way that brochures used to be. Your site is your opportunity to make sure every prospect gets the very best practice presentation of your value proposition. It also saves time in the sales process.

You'll need a prospect acquisition function, which may or not include formal marketing, but will certainly be promotion of your value add to the selected markets. There's a lot of noise made these days about social media - Twitter, Facebook, Linked In etc. In some cases claims made by 'consultants' wanting to sell you services are entirely valid, but certainly not all, and probably not many.?If you're a band selling music downloads social media is right up your street, but if you're into B2B that'll be a different story.?

Inbound marketing, particularly with blogging has its place. So does direct mail, or one of its variations such as leaflet drops.?

But if the proposition is more complex, most likely you'll need sales people on the ground, doing what they've always done. Seeking out prospective buyers, and engaging them in an 'awareness to order' process, is what sales guys do. It isn't easy, which is why they get paid a lot for doing it.?

If your business needs sales people you'd better have enough margin in your prices. Businesses using direct sales in their model, typically spend 40% of revenues paying for it.

These guys cost a lot to run - like luxury cars - but mostly waste their time chasing rainbows. In days gone by, when prices were high, and customers were gullible, businesses could afford the cost inefficiency, paying reps to sell to people who weren't going to buy. ?That was yesterday. Do that today and you'll go bust before you know it. The biggest risk, the most likely unproductive cost, is cost of sale when the prospect doesn't buy.

Negotiate a buy/sell process and then deliver it. Walk away when the prospect defaults on his side of the bargain. Stay with it when the genuine prospect needs help. Act like a business. If it looks likely not to work, don't do it. Save cost of sale investment for a better opportunity.

So what's in a sales model? Here's a list you can use as a template,?

but not literally. No two businesses are the same, and no two sales models are the same. You need to find the one which works best for you, and that may, or may not, include:

  • Researching - identifying targets who precisely meet the demographic you've chosen. Those for whom your proposition is the stand out leader.
  • Prospecting - reaching out to those targets who make the grade, introducing your new ideas and ways they'll advantage buyers.
  • Qualifying - making sure the prospect has both the ability and motivation to make a decision to purchase.
  • Resourcing - allocating the support needed - technical to get the spec right, management to get the relationship right, admin to get the paper right.
  • Collaborating - working with the prospect to agree a buy/sell process in which you'll both make sure the business about to get done will work out for both parties.
  • Negotiating - cutting the deal, on price, on terms of contract, on delivery, on risk management.
  • Closing - the part everybody wants to do - signing the order, buying the lunch, and the office celebration. Get all of the wood behind the arrowhead.
  • Account Maintenance - staying with the customer once the deal is done, arranging delivery, ensuring quality, finding new ways to add even more value.
  • Leveraging - finding ways to build on your success with testimonials, referrals, introductions, contributions to user groups.

This is an awfully big concept. You can easily see how it might apply to other, more complex businesses, but does it really apply to you? ?Yes it does.?

My mother ran a successful business for 40 years, making curtains (or drapes if you prefer), never employing more than 2 people. She wouldn't have recognised the model described here as anything she did, but its exactly what she did.?

It made sense to her, simple common sense.

Make sure the customer will like what you do, and then do it well. ?Everything else naturally follows.

Why doesn?t the traditional approach to selling and sales management work so well any more? What can the modern sales professional do to stay relevant in today?s customer driven markets?? Check out our eBook?Reengineering Sales Management?for ideas on how to embrace the new order of customer driven buyer/seller relationships.

"The Hobbit" at 48 Frames - Hey, What Happened to Middle Earth?

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - In Chapter 1 of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," Gandalf the wizard offers Bilbo Baggins the chance to "share in an adventure," and Bilbo - the Hobbit after whom the book is named - reacts with scorn.

"We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures," Bilbo says. "Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things!"

After seeing Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," the first of three movies that the director plans to make from Tolkien's book, I have to wonder: Am I turning into a Hobbit? Because I found the film and particularly its hyper-clarity courtesy of 48 frames-per-second projection, a little disturbing and uncomfortable.

Jackson's "The Hobbit" is an unexpected journey in more ways than one. Unexpected because while the three volumes and 1,000-plus pages of Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" justified three movies, "The Hobbit" is a slim children's book far lighter in both tone and plot.

Unexpected because the book is 150 pages shorter than the shortest of the three "LOTR" books, and yet Jackson has opted to turn it into three movies, with the help of material plundered from the "Return of the King" appendices and various other Tolkien sources.

And unexpected because in projecting and screening the film at 48fps, twice the rate at which film has been projected until now, Jackson has taken a familiar and beloved land, the Middle Earth of his and Tolkien's imagination, and turned it into a disquieting and unfamiliar environment.

"I'm the biggest film nerd there is, and it took me a while to adjust to it," Jackson told TheWrap at a Monday evening reception for his film. "But once I made the adjustment, I thought it opened up new possibilities - and it took advantage of 3D in a way that 24fps can't do."

But how long will it take viewers to make that adjustment?

"I don't know," he said. "But I think most of them will be good by the middle of the movie."

As much as Bilbo is doing in the story, Jackson is venturing into uncharted territory here - and for all the potential upside to ever-improving cinema technology, to these eyes the new format doesn't serve his film well.

TheWrap will have a full review closer to the release date, but on first viewing, this diehard "Lord of the Rings" fan found "The Hobbit" to be too bloated and too slow. And the pleasure of returning to Middle Earth, something I was looking forward to doing, dissipated when that Middle Earth turned out to have the disconcerting look of a high-def video production.

"It's definitely a push into the next generation of filmmaking," said Weta Digital director Joe Letteri, the senior visual-effects supervisor for the film, when I spoke to him on Monday. "And every time that happens, some people are going to be left behind, and others are going to embrace it."

Maybe I'll embrace it after a second viewing - or maybe I'll continue to miss the Middle Earth I remember from the first three movies, where things aren't quite so vivid or so goofy.

The thing is, I'm not sure that Letteri doesn't agree with me. "Sure, a lot of us are nostalgic for the look of film, and 24 frames," he said. "But that's gradually going away. The next generation will be seeing digital and stereo as more commonplace, and once that happens, I think more and more films will pick up the high frame rate side of it as well.

"It points the way toward how films will look in the future."

Certainly, the 48fps "Hobbit" has its pleasures, foremost among them some thrilling vistas near the end of the film. And the movie will be projected in the usual 24fps in the majority of theaters, in a variety of formats that include 2D, 3D, IMAX and IMAX 3D.

When conventioneers at CinemaCon in April reacted skeptically to a 10-minute 48fps presentation of "Hobbit" footage, Jackson said that viewers needed to settle into the whole movie, and that post-production work still needed to be done to the footage.

"You don't know whether you like it or not until you can be immersed in it for two hours," he said at ComicCon three months later. "That's not how it should be judged - not in a convention hall, in an environment that is not the cinema."

After seeing it in an environment that is the cinema, though, I still have my doubts. Like Bilbo Baggins, I'm not sure I want to go on this adventure.

SECOND THOUGHTS: At the time this story was originally published on Monday night, I was seeing "The Hobbit" for the second time, again at 48fps. And I have to admit that not only did the movie strike me as better - faster and more entertaining, though still padded and at times silly - but the format wasn't as bothersome.

I still think the high frame rate takes you out of the movie at times, particularly in scenes that feature well-lit actors prominently in the frame. But about half the time, the format came closer to justifying Jackson's experiment than it had seemed on first viewing.

So maybe I'm just one of those viewers who needs more time to adjust.

Auto recovery gains momentum in November

6 hrs.

ANALYSIS:?It?s been nearly 40 years since Volkswagen did as well.? For Porsche, it was its?best month. Ever.? Nissan and its luxury brand Infiniti posted records of their own.

After an unexpected setback just a month earlier, November appears to have delivered a new level of momentum for the U.S. auto industry ? which now appears to be on track for an even bigger recovery in 2013.??

Sales in November were on pace to top an annual rate of 15 million vehicles, which would mark the highest level since the 15.5 million rate of February 2008.?Automakers on Monday?reported new-car sales figures and the news was good across the board.?

Ironically, the same force that cut sales in October appear to have provided the industry a much-needed tailwind a month later: Superstorm Sandy. The disaster forced as many as 100,000 potential buyers to postpone purchases until November, according to industry analysts.

"We were??very encouraged by the strong sales recovery experienced in those northeastern regions that were ravaged by Superstorm Sandy and expect continued momentum there for the balance of the year,? said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales for Hyundai Motor America.

The Korean maker posted record sales of 53,487 vehicles last month, an 8 percent increase compared with the same record-setting period a year ago. That was all the more significant considering the month began with news that Hyundai and sibling Kia had inflated mileage ratings on 13 models and would have to pare them back by as much as 6 miles per gallon.

Of course, it helped that Hyundai got out earlier with a promise to reimburse owners of affected vehicles. And the maker also ramped up its incentives by an average 29 percent, year-over-year, to $1,586 per vehicle, according to an estimate by data tracking service TrueCar.com.?

In fact, makers generally upped their incentives during November, hoping to sustain momentum.? The average increase was 4.4 percent compared to year-earlier givebacks, and 19.3 percent compared to October of this year.

Chrysler was one of the rare exceptions, trimming its November incentives by 22 percent from the year before ? a move reflecting the fact that it continued gaining ground in the wake of its 2009 bankruptcy. The maker has now reported 32 consecutive monthly sales gains. Its Fiat brand, in particular, was up 123 percent as its expanding line-up finally begins catching hold after a painfully slow launch.

?We are expecting a strong December as the industry continues to recover from the East Coast hurricane and consumers continue to respond to our popular year-end Big Finish event,? said Reid Bigland, CEO of the Dodge brand and Chrysler?s corporate head of sales.

Going into the month it was far from certain November would turn out so well.? The Superstorm had devastated large swaths of the East Coast and left scores of showrooms in the tri-state New York area shuttered.? The presidential election raised any number of concerns about the mood of the electorate ? and the health of the economy. Indeed, November brought with it growing concerns about the so-called ?fiscal cliff? and the possibility that talk of another recession might lead consumers to rein in spending.

But if anything, ?the Black Friday sales provided a boost,? according to Hyundai?s Zuchowski, with most manufacturers reporting little, if any, impact from the fiscal cliff crisis.

Not only were buyers back in the market along the storm-ravaged East Coast but, if anything, the destruction appeared to have triggered a flood of sales as buyers raced to replace the estimate 100,000 or more vehicles destroyed during the disaster, according to Bill Fay, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager.

The Toyota executive also pointed to ?pent up demand, record low finance rates and exciting new products (for) also driving demand.?

Indeed, the market is seeing one of the biggest outpourings of new product in industry history. An estimate 50 new models are on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week, and at least that many more are expected to debut during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

New product helped a long list of automakers claim records for November, and the buoyant mood suggested that the trend will likely continue in the months ahead.

?We expect showroom traffic to remain strong through the holiday gift-giving season,? forecast Ben Poore, the general manager for the Infiniti brand.

What remains to be seen is whether automakers will use November?s momentum ? with sales coming in at an annualized rate estimated at between 14.7 million and 15.1 million ? to pare back on incentives.? The average giveback last month jumped to $2,764 per vehicle, according to TrueCar, compared to $2,317 in October and $2,647 in November 2011.

At the same time, transaction prices ? the figure the typical motorist actually pays after adding in options and deducting givebacks ? surged to their highest levels in a year, at an average $30,832.?

?Industry average transaction prices climb once again with consumers' continued appetite for highly contended vehicles," said Jesse Toprak, Senior Analyst at TrueCar.

Despite the sense that consumers are growing increasingly confident about the economy, industry leaders still fear the market could take a serious hit if Washington lawmakers fail to reach a deal on taxes and spending. But most analysts are keeping their fingers crossed that a settlement will be reached in time to keep the overall economy rolling.?

A Taste of Southern Italy

? ?La cucina povera? is a way of life in the Campania region of southern Italy, where cooks use fantastic local products to create a bold, flavorful cuisine that is affordable for every family,? says Frank DeLoach, the executive chef of Neapolitan Pizzeria, which opened in early November in the old Caf? Vienna location in south Laguna. ?Creating cuisine with California products and the spirit of ?la cucina povera? is our passion.? Using all natural, seasonal ingredients and a Stefano Ferrara Neapolitan pizza oven?a true work of art that turns humble products into unique dishes, the chef says?the pizzeria boasts soulful salads, pizzas and sweets. Unique offerings include the octopus and potato salad, Autumn pizza (pumpkin and agrodolce) and affogato (coffee-based drink with vanilla gelato) dessert. (949-499-4531; nealaguna.com) ?A.B.

Italian Culinary Secrets Revealed

If you are familiar with the Aless? restaurants in coastal cities, or if you have dined at the local trendy Mare Culinary Lounge, you might have gushed about the mouth-watering Italian cuisine that left you mentally hungry for more. Now, you can learn the secrets of that great Italian cooking by taking culinary lessons at Mare from Alessandro Pirozzi, an award-winning chef and owner of the Aless? family of restaurants and Mare Culinary Lounge.

With two four-class cooking collections?Collection I through November 2012 and Collection II in January/February 2013?Alessandro teaches eager learners the art that goes into the making of appetizers, pasta, main courses, panini and pizzas.

In the appetizer course, foodies will learn to make three hors d?oeuvres and be served three special wines. The pasta course features tips on making the perfect pasta dough and different sauces. The main course class allows culinary students to pair fish or meat, along with savory side dishes, with the chef?s selection of wines. And finally, the panini and pizza course demonstrates the secrets behind Mare?s famous thin, crispy crust. Each class includes a tasting of all demonstrated dishes and a participation gift. ?J.H.

Out-of-This-World Dessert

There?s vanilla ice cream and a hint of maple. It?s hot, cold, sweet?and salty. But what is it? Opened in Laguna in summer 2012 with a unique beach-themed interior, Umami Burger introduces the UFO (Unidentified Fried Object)?a delectable vanilla-maple, cream-filled oatmeal cookie sandwich tempura battered and fried, topped with a mint leaf, vanilla bean ice cream and course sea salt. A savory mix of sweet and salty, the UFO is a popular choice at Umami, even though it is not printed on the menus. ?It?s a huge hit,? general manager Kywan Lee says. ?People order it before their burgers to make sure they don?t become too full for dessert. Part of the fun is that when customers order it, they don?t know what?s in it.? The delicacy is only available at the Laguna Beach and Los Feliz locations.

More tantalizingly epic desserts around town:

Hog Heaven Pie from Lumberyard: A colossal slice of peanut butter mousse fused with chocolate ganache set upon a cookie crumb crust and drizzled with chocolate and caramel syrup.
Kona pie from Rock?n Fish: An oversized ice cream cake with three layers of chocolate, vanilla and coffee ice cream, mixed with Butterfinger, toffee and Oreo crumbs, and topped with sugared almonds and whipped cream. ?J.H.

New at Stonehill Tavern

Celebrity chef Michael Mina?s Stonehill Tavern at The St. Regis Monarch Beach welcomed new executive chef Raj Dixit in October, along with a new menu. Having worked under chef Craig Shelton at the Ryland Inn in New Jersey, Raj says the knowledge and experience gained from this has been immeasurable to his current success. Raj also brings his experience from New York?s fine dining scene at New Bouley Restaurant and was more recently the executive chef at The Inn at Dos Brisas in Washington, Texas. She discovered her family history, and you can, too - Chapel Hill News

Published: Dec 01, 2012 07:00 PM
Modified: Dec 01, 2012 05:57 PM

At first, Deborah Long was hesitant to pry too deep into her family history ? concerned that she might uncover too much pain and heartache. Now her journey has become more than a life-changing experience. It?s also the inspiration for a new Triangle educational group.Long, a Chapel Hill real estate instructor, formed the Triangle Jewish Genealogical Society to educate members and the public on the importance of uncovering Jewish family histories.Membership is open to all, and Long stresses that participants do not have to be Jewish. They just need to share an interest in learning about their family roots.Long spoke about the society in an interview. Answers have been edited for length and clarity. Q. Talk about your initial reluctance in embarking on a family history project. The past is not very pretty for a lot of Jewish people. They don?t want to take a look at the Holocaust on a regular basis. There?s a lot to despair about. My sister, in particular, didn?t want to be reminded.I tried to talk to my parents, but like a lot of parents, they were not very comfortable. I could only ask so many questions before I could feel the sadness overwhelm my mother.I quoted William Faulkner, who wrote ?The past is never dead. It?s not even past.? You can?t understand where you?re going unless you understand where you come from. Q. What were some of your discoveries? With the advent of the Internet and all of these translation services, I was able to find my second cousins who wound up in, of all places, Sweden. I found some cousins in Hungary and Canada.I just did the detective work and started to make some of the connections through documents. It took two years of research to reconstruct the family tree.More than 150 relatives perished in the Holocaust. When I started, I only knew of my grandparents and aunts and uncles. (Now) I don?t know everyone?s stories, but at least I have their names. My family came from Poland. They worked with fur and leather and owned a hardware store. Finding out those stores interested other members of my family, not with the same degree of passion, but (now) they?re engaged. Q. What advice would you give to people just getting started?Start with what you know. If you have older relatives, interview them. Get family names and the towns where they lived.Be flexible about spelling and pronunciation because names have a way of mutating. Investigate what would be the best software program for you to invest in. The software makes it so much easier to organize your records, and do all kinds of sorting. Q. Did you relatives gradually warm up to the idea?My sister could not believe we had any surviving relatives. It got to the point where I was finding so many living cousins, she said, ?We?ve got to stop, I can only keep track of so many.?On my mother?s side, these are bittersweet discoveries. My mom died (in 2008) believing no one in her family survived (the Holocaust), that she was the only one who made it out. There?s tremendous survivor guilt among the people who made it, that feeling of, why was I so lucky?I wish my parents were here so I could show them what I discovered.

This recent inclusion of big names brings the company's impressive library to a total of 80 even, letting iPad users now peruse the likes of New York Magazine, Food & Wine and Men's Fitness, just to name a few. Pricing for both Unlimited subscription tiers remains unchanged, with $10/mo still netting users access to 73 monthly and bi-weekly titles, while the more premium $15/mo service opens up the entire archive. As of now, these new additions won't work on Android slates, but the company promises "work is underway" to make them available across the board. Hit up the break to check out the official release.

Marcy Miller: Internet Warfare

Being victimized by jealous women on the internet is not limited to generals and celebrities. I have also been the target of a cyber bully, and in my case, it was an ex-wife.

I had been dating a man who had recently begun the divorce process and had been living separately from his wife for about five months. We were fixed up by my good friend at a holiday party, and there was chemistry from the start. We began to date and spend time in my part of the city, while the soon-to-be-ex lived in another community about 40 minutes away. We never crossed paths or bumped into one another. As far as I was concerned, she was not even on my radar.

I had heard that she had anger issues and was not well-liked by his kids or his friends. I would joke that she was an easy act to follow, but she hardly seemed to be an issue for my date at all. The marriage had been over for some time and he just wanted to get on with his life.

One night, my date and I went to a movie and I left my cell phone in the car. When I returned, there were over 200 messages on my phone and more coming in. I was alarmed and began to read the texts. They were all from men, stating in various lewd references that they would love to have sex with me and wanted to come over ASAP. I was shocked. I had no idea where they came from and immediately called Verizon, but they were of no help.

Putting to use my best "Nancy Drew" investigative skills, I decided to call one of the men and ask where he had found my contact information. He told me that he was responding to my ad on Craigslist, and he gave me the number of the ad. I rushed home to look it up. There I was, a 36 DD horny Hispanic woman who just wanted to hook up at my house with no strings attached. My cell number was conveniently included.

My next call was to Craigslist, who immediately pulled the ad and were very cooperative. After a brief investigation, it turned out that my date's soon-to-be-ex had placed the ad from a friend's computer, thinking that she would never be traced. But since he did not want to get involved, the friend who owned the computer sang like a canary and ratted her out.

I was furious. I had nothing to do with the break-up of her marriage, so why was she targeting me? It was an attack on an innocent bystander. As a lawyer who believes in fair play, I decided to bring a lawsuit against her. My purpose in doing so was to teach her a lesson so that she would leave me and other future innocent women alone. Ultimately, I dropped any charges in exchange for a written admission of guilt and an apology from her and moved on.

I know how it feels to be harassed and abused on the internet. Divorce is rarely pretty, but it must not cast a broad net that hurts innocent victims. Technology is not a weapon to be used for amusement at someone else's expense.
